hi as a new user av heared alot ppl say ignore all the signals under the 40 mark is this true and what u lot do?? or would i be missing out on any good finds ignoring the lower numbers

99% of the time the numbers under 40 are going to be old pieces of iron, nails, spikes, anything really. There are some instances where certain jewelry will come up around 40 or under. For me the chances of that happening are not worth it. If I am out in a remote soccer field or some place like that and it does not have a bunch of iron I will not notch it out and dig some. Most of the places I hunt (parks and older home sites) have so much iron in them that I personally can't stand to listen to it. Some people leave it as you will get a little more depth with less discrimination. If it is really trashy site I notch at 40, if it is medium I might go to 30. Again I just don't like the constant tones of the iron.

Thanks for your reply so its true what alot av been saying then I guess I should start to av some iron discrimination on from now on and not worrie about the lower numbers as much al leave most under the 40 mark when on iron infested sites but if on a beach were on dry sand al still dig them targets as good chance of it being jewelry

If you ignore the signals under 40, if relic hunting, you lose a lot of great finds. When coin hunting, targets bouncing between 40 and 80-90 often are common Canadian clad.

The detectors are designed to just not give an audio signal on the notches which are disced out. If you look closely, you will notice a cursor still appearing on the notched out segments. Now older metal detectors with the old discrimination knob will in fact give you a loss of depth as it is increased.

Thanks for the advice mate its I'm very grateful:) I found couple of charts on tone id for items as seen in the pictures
