AT PRO in salt water

New member
Used my AT pro at the beach for the first time the other day. Worked great on the beach but not in the water. It would constantly give a signal when the coil touched water same with the pro pointer. Im using the small 5 x9 coil. Is there any adjustment I can do or is this not a good detector for salt water. Thanks

Sorry to say the AT Pro being a single frequency VLF detector will not perform that well on whet salt water sand applications. It will do fine and is an excellent detector on dry sand and fresh water applications. The AT Pro will false like crazy on whet salt water sand especially in the water. The only thing you can do is turn down the sensitivity and re- ground balance until things get a little better but the cost will be depth loss.

You will need a duel or multi frequency detector for whet salt water sand such as the Fisher CZ-21 ( water proof to 250ft ) or the Minelab multi frequency units such as the Excalibur ( water proof 250ft ) and a few other models they make. I personally use the Fisher CZ-21 myself and it does an excellent job on whet salt water sand and dry, fresh water sand is no problem ( it will do it all but it is not a metered detector )

Also for salt water applications you can use a PI detector they are not affected at all by salt water and get great depth but they will not discriminate so you dig everything. I have the Tesoro Sand Shark PI for whet salt water use, great detector. There are other brand PI units out there to by White's and Garrett and other brands that also perform very well.

Some areas you just can't use the AT Pro. I used mine today at a local beach that it works good and there is another beach I hunt that it is useless. Setting for today were Zero disc, iron audio at 35, Sens., had to be turned down to 4 notches, and ground balance in the wet sand down to 15. It did false when I rubbed the coil on the bottom, but the AT PRO is HOT on small gold and chains.

A lot of work to use the Pro in salt water! Personally i just take my SeaHunter Pulse machine for that useage. Pro is good in fresh water without too much recalibration!

Try Ground Balancing in the water. Deep enough that the coil stay submerged while pumping the coil up and down. You may have to adjust manually, and GB often when moving to different parts of the beach, i.e. moving from dry toward the water. I GB and hunt parallel to the water, move toward the water a little, GB again, and hunt parallel again. Some places I can see the difference in the layers and know to GB in each. You shouldn't have to change much, if at all, in the water.

Like stated previously there are beaches that are very difficult to hunt. I have one that has a lot of black sand, and another covered with metal chips of many sizes.
