AT PRO in a third world country

Joel-Winnipeg

New member
Just disembarked from a 7 day tour of Jamaica. Nice beaches and country but lots of poor people.
Hit one of their beaches with the AT PRO worked the salty dry sand.
Was there for two hours at one of there public beaches which was connected to a private one
in turn connected to an all inclusive.
The all inclusive was guarded by security guards to keep the natives.out.
Wire fence to separate the beaches, still shore line access to all the beaches.
At the fence one I could see weed transaction being done between the tourist and guys with big gold chains dangling
from there neck.
I hunted for two hours in the sand recovered lots of bottle caps
and coins corroded by the salt.
No jewelry showed up.
Had two kids following me making a pest of themselves so ended giving them the handful of coins I found.
I kept hearing the comments ( those rich guys with their expensive detectors from the US / CAN come here to stealing our gold ) This was coming from those guys wearing the big gold chains.
Did not feel safe so gave up on the detecting after only two hours.
Once the AT PRO was balanced the dry sand it gave up its find easily up to 10 inches.
As soon as i approached the wet sand and water it would go crazy never did get a chance to go in the water.
Could not concentrate as I kept looking over my shoulder not sure what could happen.
If I'd been able to really test out the detector I'm sure that it would have worked well in the wet areas.
Would I go back there again likely yes but in the all inclusive with none of the deadbeats breathing down my neck.
Hunt those areas in the ( all inclusive ) early morning or at night.would be the ideal.

wow....that would make me wonder too..
good luck

Wow , thats a total bummer for the detecting part Joel. Trying to be safe in a third world country sounds intrepid for a metal detectorist.B nice to c some of your pics?

There were public parks in New Orleans where I did not feel safe detecting alone, I used an Old Hickory butcher knife for cutting plugs. Several times a gang of youths backed off when seeing I always kept it in my right hand.

At least you had some fun in the sun for a week even if you didn't feel comfortable on the beach...

That was an interesting post. People think we are rich, but don't realize half of our year is buried in snow. Most of us must work hard and save for those trips. On the other hand, there are the native populations, probably very poor, lack education along with employment opportunities and take up the highest population in their jails. Sounds like a bit home to me.

I bet it was still nice to get away from the brutal winter we had. We still have lots of snow, however, it is starting to melt. Hope you had a great time Joel.
