AT Pro Going Crazy

This morning I was out hunting when the AT just started freaking out....the numbers were jumping all over and the thing was falsing when it was held in mid air. I tried to "reset to factory settings" but it wouldn't respond then I turned it off and back on and it was still doing it. Finally I shut it off and headed back to the car.....when I got there I turned it back on and it seemed like everything was fine. Has anyone else experienced this? This is my 2ND AT Pro from Garrett as the first one didn't work correctly. There were no power lines overhead and the batteries are good.

Sounds like EMF, and what happens around power stations, or major power lines. I've had it happen before.

Is there any chance that there was an "underground" electrical line, I have two spots that I hunt, and and the lines are underground, and it will cause the "PRO" to act like it needs an exorcism. When you walk past the electrical field it eventually slows down and stops.

Then again maybe you just entered the Twilight Zone

Its possible that there is something underground there....I'll be heading out later this afternoon for a hunt and see if it acts up again.

Sound to me like there were underground dog fence. I could not get within 100 feet of the boundary. When the owner shut it off, it was perfect. Try it at a spot you have used it before. If it still acts up, something wrong.

Same thing happened to me and it was the batteries. When you get down to close to one bar you need to change them. Even says so in the manual. My machine went berzerk till I changed them out now it's banging hard and loud on targets. Noticed it seemed to hit softer and not as loud when the batteries got down.

It's not EMF. I am waiting for my fourth AT Pro, same thing with the other three. Something in the circuit board shorts out and you are left hanging. Call Garrett and they will send you another i am sure. Good luck.

Mine did the same thing inside the House. When i switched frequency it stopped. F4 seemed to quiet it down.

Everyone knows their customer service is good but what are we to think of their QC Dept. ?

Good Hunting

Well it could be something in the spot where you were having the noise. I would try hunting in another area and see how it behaves. Mine did that this evening while walking out of a football field past a school bus garage. Just carrying the detector at my side and it went nuts for about 50 feet. I was not that close to anything that looked like it could be causing EMI but there it was. In my case there is nothing wrong with my detector, it was picking up EMI because when I moved away from that spot it was back to normal. I did do a reset or even turn it off.

The batteries are good....only 1 notch below full power.

********UPDATE*********

Turns out the AT is working great again.....went back to the place and it started in again but as I walked further away from that place it got better......turn out there is a cell phone or radio antenna mounted on the top of the bathroom building about 25-30 yards away that was causing the problem....the closer I got to that the worse it got.....further away the better. Tried to change frequencies but that didn't work.

That is good news. It is going to take a while to get used to the characteristics of the At Pro. I am learning something every time I go out with it.
Have fun.
