AT Pro falsing?

grumpysrb

New member
Took the AT Pro to the beach for the first time. I tried the wet sand and was confused by what happened. It appeared to give false signals as the vdi and indicator jumped all over and the tones did pretty much the same thing. I ground balanced and turned the sensitivity down a couple bars. What am I doing wrong?

I've recently had this issue in my uncle's yard, but that place is ridden with iron and junk in the ground. Not the normal air interference there but as soon as I point it to the ground there, the signals start to jumping. Hope you figure this out.

I have had this happen to me in areas where there is too much electrical interference or I'm too close to wires in the ground. The only thing that worked for me was to move away from the area I thought might be making the AT false and restart the AT again........and so forth until no falsing occurred. I also tried changing the frequency with no luck either. I have been in the same areas with other VLF machines and had no such problems whatsoever............so yea not sure what the story is there. maybe other users can shed some light on this issue.
Cheers!

Your AT Pro is ok, most VLF detectors can't handle ocean wet sand.

That's a normal reaction for most ocean wet sand, hunt closer to the dry sand area or in dry sand.

Yeah, this is the common thing I run into in the same type of areas too. Hopefully there is a practical answer for this.

It is confusing and frustrating to have this happen. One of the reasons I bought the AT Pro was for use on wet saltwater beach sand. There was no indication of this in the Garrett video. I'll try again when I have more time and the weather is better. Should be something to find, the surf was churning big time when I left.

From the land of the Bluenose.....watch the instructional Garrett AT Pro vids on Youtube.....worked for this bouy. Had to notch down sens, ground balance manually and it did the dew. Good luck.

[size=large]as best i know Garrett never said it would work in salt water. in its ads only fresh water is mentioned. other hunters took the ATP to the beach and started using them. they are the ones who can tell you what or how to hunt the salt waters. there was a big to-do about that when they first came out. some die-hards tried shouting down that fact but could not produce any ads with salt water. so what ever you learn will be from those who learned the hard way

Garrett has a video on using the ATP in Saltwater and wet Saltwater sand. If it won't work in saltwater, I'd call that false advertising.

Here's a link to that video
AT Pro saltwater video

That same technique works for inland areas too. It doesn't necessarily have to be around water for this to work.

[size=large]once again, Garrett has never said in any of it's ads one could use the ATPro in salt water. others have in their own opinions. the video is made by a third party and if you hunt around the site owners have a disclaimer telling you no manufacturer is affiliated with the site. what you will learn is how they found how to use the atp in salt water. once again it is not a Garrett authorized website. these nice folks show how they found out how it can be done. Garrett will not make the claim. fresh water only in their ads.

The video is made by the same guy who made all the videos on the Garrett site. And has the Garrett Tm at the end and I believe I first saw it on the Garrett site.

Anyway, I'll practice more next time I get to the beach.

FWIW, the Garrett website does say that the ATPro can be used in salt water. The ATgold in fresh water only. I assume you have to manually ground balance it in the water. I'm still on the fence, thinking about getting the ATPro. Just haven't convinced myself yet.

Dang, You mean I'm right about something!?

Anyway, I like the ATP very much. It goes deep, most often accurately what is down there, pin points very well has distinguishable tones. But there is things I think need improved. I won't be giving it up.

It's the farm fields that I hunt that I think the ATpro will excell. In watching the videos on the Garrett site it seems the iron audio feature will help. The fast response is something that interests me. My Explorer goes deep but it isn't the fastest in the iron infested fields. Am I headed in the right direction? I guess all the posts about the cable connection issues is holding me back. I've been reading this forum closely and will continue. Been very helpful, will keep you posted, thanks, Joe.

According to the Garrett video you auto ground balance and then if needed manually fine adjust the ground balance.

My AT Pro does very well on dirt. I love almost everything about this machine. So far what I don't like is the short headphone cord, which I just stretch frequently and the extra weight. The weight is from the extra long rod. I bought a smaller coil for when this becomes a problem. I often hunt for 6 or more hours and my shoulders get tired.

I live in Bradenton Fl use the AT Pro all the time in salt water dont really have any issues when you ground balance it in the water , in any mode or sensitivity it works good , some times in the shallows like really wet sand to about 4 inches of water i get some false signals. but over all it works good
