At Pro, EMI and 5x8 Coil

I picked up a used one Friday. I needed a good water machine and finally got it. In the city I live electical lines are everywhere. I researched the problem on this forum and the discrimiation adjustment works but I dont normally use any at all except in the iron range. I hunt parks and schools for coins and jewelry mostly with my Safari but will use this one as back up and when going to lakes with my boat. I have learned that to get around that just back down on Sens. I have ordered a 5x8 so that the unit is not so nose hvy. Im also hoping that it decreaces the EMI concern Im having. Not a major deal but has anyone found that the smaller coil has helped with this? Also wondering if anyone uses the straight shaft with the stock coil? Fellow I got it from has offered to buy back if unhappy but I really want to keep this MD. This one is no where near as bad as the Fishers Ive had. The only FTP product Ive owned that wasnt effected by EMI is the CZ3D and the other box units. Thanks

I too purchased an AT Pro as a "wader" in June. I added the 5x8 coil, which in my opinion is a must for anyone hunting parks and schools. One of the parks I hunt has an extreme EMI affecting the AT Pro. I've heard people talk about ground EMI, but I believe the power lines are buried right through the middle of this park. It can get rather noisy to the point of impossible ESPECIALLY AFTER a rain storm or watering. Even adjusting the frequency offset while using the 8.5 x11 coil, the machine was still noisy. The only manageable way I have found was to use the smaller 5x8 coil with frequency offset and lower sensitivity. The AT Pro responds magnificently to this arrangement for me and my situation. At this EMI infested park, I personally use Pro Zero Mode, Iron Discriminate set at 36, frequency offset and sensitivity set to quite things down, I ground balance plus 5. The 5x8 coil on the AT Pro is deadly (at least with my ground conditions) on jewelry. The proof is in the results. I hope this helps with your situation. Happy hunting.

I am surprised you did not get more responses. I think all of our brains our numb from too many campaign adds.
I don't think I have any areas that I have noticed EMI from ground wires. I have hunted many areas with overhead wires, high voltage lines and electric fences. The AT Pro with the 5 x 8 coil is by far the most stable machine I have used in the high EMI areas. It is an easy machine to use but it still takes some hours to appreciate the nuances of the tones blending. I find it the most relaxing detector I have used. I 'd be surprised if you don't come to favor it.

Thanks guys. I use a Minelab Safari and tone rolling is nothing new. The wire I was speaking about are overhead. It gets less as you move away from the lines and around 50 ft its gone. I have some underground lines at my house it gets trouble from but my test garden is in the rear and its very stable This will be used as a lake, creek and pond unit. My 5x8 coil should be here by Friday and cant what to try it out. Ive already had 2 offers to buy it and thats a no go. JR
