AT Pro depth in salt water....

MonsterTab

New member
Im thinking of grabbing a water proof machine for beach trips, thing is, Im only going to be in the ocean, maybe, 4 hours a year.... So if the AT Pro could handle those hours somewhat respectably I would have a machine that I could bring back home and get some lake/river use out of.

I know the MK Hunter or Sand Shark is better suited for saltwater hunting but they would have limited use (outside of maybe some farmland) for any detecting the other 8756 hours of the year.

Advice?

While some people say they have trouble on the beach I think it has a lot to do with setup. Two of us run our AT-Pros on FL beaches and wade in a few salt water lagoons quite a bit. In fact we were there yesterday!

Before someone says there's no black sand in Florida either you're wrong. Some beaches here are free of it but others have quite a bit and yes they still work there, set up right, without being really noisy.

Now as for depth while they are no match for an Excal, Sovereign, CZ-21 or good PI, they are no slouch either. Ground balance is critical and will change from dry sand to wet sand to surf zone to submerged. I find in some spots while wading or in the surf line I need to turn the sense down a bit.

In the water I've found coin targets down to probably 8". On the dry sand 10" to 11". Deeper on big junk but then it's the beach and you have to try! Sure a good beach machine will beat it on depth but not in the price range or in a multipurpose water proof unit.

I'm sure there are beaches where the performance is less but like any detector you have to learn it and how to run it in various locations to get the best from it.

The Mark II are and sand shark are both PI`s and will beep on everything. The AT Pro, although not as deep as a PI, will at least allow you to disc out the iron. The AT Pro will also serve you well in the dry sand.
