AT Pro control box breakage

My son has an AT Pro, It was 2 years old in June. Since he has owned it, he has had the control box break off twice, at the 2 mounting studs on the bottom side of the control box. I was with him the second time it happened, he was swinging it side to side and it just fell off. He uses the detector 5 or 6 days a week, 4 or 5 hours a day, which I know is a lot of use, but I dont think that should really have anything to do with the plastic wearing out. I was just wondering if anyone else has had any problems like this. it is now out of warranty, so I dont have a clue what a new control box housing will run.

I repaired my friends AT-Pro that's a weak point from continually dropping the detector on the ground.
I bought Grillia Glue and 2 Plaster Board 10/32 metal inserts. Cut them both to match the height of
the plastic under the unit. Put the large metal section down mixed and poured the glue bought a
1/2 inch half moon electrical metal clamp reformed it slightly screwed it in. Also redrilled the 2 broken holes
and retapped them. Went to a surplus store bought 2 metal pins so the would rest against the plastic
case also replaced screws with 10/32 screws. You need to cut the screw length. It will never break there again.
From Frank. mypenneys. Would have posted my work but lost my phone. My have stored then but not sure

Get metal tubing holder....they sell a c bracket..that fits the speaker holes..put two on it bolts it right in.....use the same screws..think it is 3/4 tubing clamp!

Mine broke off after a few years. Also was cracked where batteries went in. Out of warranty. Garrett replaced the whole outside box, retuned it, threw in some parts for the shaft. $50 bucks. Came back better than ever.

A weak point for sure. I've had the same thing happen with two different out of warranty AT Pros.

This needs to be fixed on the new AT's that come out. There are some things you always hear about, the box breaking off is one of those things. I have also noticed the clamps that tighten the shaft will crack after some time of use or if your heavy handed tightening them down if you have a large coil on the machine. I am going to "upgrade" my mounting system from the stock one day so it doesn't happen to me in the field.

Another option is you could get a Mars telescopic shaft. I put my AT pro on one and HAD to cut the mounting studs down. I like it much better than the factory s-rod.

Here is a pic of what mascard1 is telling you to do..And its a lot stronger than garretts two screws,if you do this you'll never have a problem again. It will not move.

For now I just took a 8/32 bottom tap and threaded the 2 partial studs that were left, and ran a couple machine screws into that. Probably wont hold for too long, but it was enough to get him back out for now. I will probably go with the 2 clamp idea, it looks pretty secure. I think Garrett really needs to rethink that design.

go to home depot and get 2 long screws and screw it threw the same holes on to the box, mines broke a year ago and I did this to it and its been fine all this time,

Have a look at this youtube video. This guy has a pretty neat idea, and it also allows you to swivel the box for better viewing.
