AT PRO - Coins-Jewelry ?

Retired Digger

New member
I have been reading a lot of good reports about the AT PRO for relic hunting but have not heard that much about coins or jewelry. Some have stated that it was primarily designed for relic hunting because of the frequency. I will gladly take any relic I can find, but I am primarily a coin, jewelery hunter. Kellyco says that I am now 5Th on the waiting list for my AT PRO. Does anyone out there think that it will be a good coin machine ?

This was the primary reason I cancelled my order. The AT Pro is designed to be a relic hunting machine. With the frequency it runs it's not going to hit hard on silver. It will hit hard on small pieces of gold and iron. I switched my order to the ACE 350 running at 8mhz which I think will make for a better coin/jewelry machine which is they type of hunting I'm interested in.

I thought it was interesting that the Vaughan Garrett AT Pro videos showed them air testing bottle caps, nails and gold nuggets. Sure would have been nice for them to show how silver coins are going to react. If you hear of any other AT Pro owners hitting deep silver coins please fill us in. I'm curious to see how it will work on these myself.

Took at to the beach today just to check out the audio. Was very cold and windy but stayed anyway. Worked very well in the wet salt sand once I manually ground balanced very little chatter. AT hits great on clad and was very easy to pinpoint just using the toe of the coil. Can't wait ti summer I think its going to be a great beach hunter including the water.

in regards to your question the ATPro is an awesome coin machine. went to an old youth camp ranch today and we found coin after coin after coin and a silver charm from a necklace. I'll post pictures this weekend after i rest up..

From what I've seen it has been great on coins so far. I went on a night hunt at a tot lot and found 12 quarters, some that I've passed over with the ACE at least twice! Those few were around 8" deep almost to the weed barrier. I also found several dimes, the usual pennies, a gold plated earring and a silver pendant.

Now I haven't tried it for any deep silver so I can't be sure on that.. I have a place to try if I can get the time though!

I just returned from a local park with my AT Pro and found coins with no problems, and I'm new at this and it was my first time out. I think this rumor is not true at all

In general what you are saying is true of machines that came out just a few years ago. But recently the processors and other circuitry related things have changed that. Keith Southern has reported his AT Pro hits hard on both high and low conductors - and he knows his stuff, very experienced detectorist. Look at his recent post "what kind of airtest number's you seeing on your unit TEX?"

Even the great designer Dave Johnson has said that frequencies are having less to do with hitting harder on certain conductors. I'm talking about detectors that range from maybe 4kHz to around 20kHz. When you get above that then it seems to really hit those very very small targets - like gold - very well and the larger targets not so well, not to mention it generally is not as deep.

Honestly, and I am looking at the AT Pro as a coin machine for next year, I would choose it hands down over the Ace 350. It's in another class and the 350 will not find coins as deep or in as much iron as the AT Pro would. I would bet on it.

I am a coin and ring hunter. The ground is frozen, covered with snow and the good sites will have to wait until spring.

However, judging from my air tests, combined with that great proven15kHz frequency, the light weight of the machine, the ability to disc out bottle caps/iron and multiple tones ID should make it a fantastic machine.

The Scorpion uses that 15kHz. It is my hottest metal detector for both coins and jewellery. It's especially hot on nickels and rings, both gold and silver. Prior to the Scorpion, I did use the ACE 250. It too was good on coins and jewellery, however the Scorpion faired better, but lacks the depth of the ACE.

works great on coins. I have not worked on the jewelry. I had one out today. 28 coins. I need a new digging tool. Mine is too short. 6inch digger was not enough. I am very surprised.

air & ground tested it today with about 30 different rings it read all of them on the button
the 15 kh should be perfect for rings & jewelery it also is hot on nickles & coins
