AT Pro being erratic? Or is it me?

Kapok

Active member
Was using my new AT Pro at a trashy park today and it started acting very erratic--making this static like sound.. It got so bad I eventually just left. I made a short YouTube video to better describe it. I couldn't unscrew my headphones because my gloves were muddy so I just stuck my phone inside them, so only the audio matters in this video.

Settings: Pro Zero, 4 bars sensitivity, ground balanced at 82.

AT Pro Being Erratic

Could be you hit a trashy area in the park. Could be your sensitivity is set too high. The sounds you have are similar to mine when I have it set up for maximum depth. It sounds kind of nervous, yet should alert you if there is a target under the coil. It might also be some interference from underground or above ground electrical lines. If that is the case, moving to another area should quiet the beast.

Good luck.

I moved to another area, same thing. My sensitivity was at 4 bars. I went down to 1 bar, same thing

Disconnect the coil from the box, (check if problem goes away) I have 2 hunting buddies that have similar issues and it turn out to be defective coil

I have experienced underground power lines. But it seems to me mine acted worse. Did you try changing the freq. Also at one park a cell tower messes with mine.
Keep us in the loop.

Okay, I'll give it a shot.

Also check that the coil connection is snug/tight. I ran both of the A T's I have and had with sen. maxed and very seldom did I have any emi issues and the few times I do/did, a frequency shift usually handles it. Also, was the grass in your park wet. If so, moisture could have gotten in the coil. I've had that happen with my first A T and also with another detector. Both times the companies replaced the coils. Good luck! HH jim tn

Actually, it had just rained, so it was quite damp, but the AT being a waterproof machine, I didn't consider it. I'll look at the coil tonight and look for any signs of leakage. Are they actually visible to the eye?

Any leaky spots could be very small and difficult to see with the naked eye. Maybe if you try and let the coil dry out for a few days the problem will go away. The easiest thing to do would be to swap out the coil with another made for the AT...that is if you have access to another. That would narrow the problem to either the coil or the unit itself. In any case I hope you get it solved soon.

Most often not. Do you have another coil to try? Often when they dry out they will work until moisture gets in again, then become erratic again. Good luck! HH jim tn

I tried it with a new 5x7 coil outisde in my yard, and it seemed okay for the first few minutes, then I got that scratchy sound again--not everywhere but it did happen a couple of times, always in pro mode. Worries me enough that I'm going to take it back to the dealer and see what he says.

My Pro acted like yours . Drove me nut s until I tightened the coil connector. Mine has a tendency to work a little loose so when it acts strange I just tighten the connector. I hope it's this simple.

Just bought my AT Pro, pretty much the same thing. Every time I swing the coil it goes through all the tones then settles down when I turn the sensitivity to one bar. This is a new machine just received it last week from Kelly co. When I ground balance it it has a chatter that wont go away no matter if I ground balance in manual or auto. I have been detecting for 20 years and never came across a machine like this. also on pinpoint I get a tone constantly no matter where I put the coil so pinpoint really does no good. Anyway that's my two cents worth from Arizona (along the Colorado River) Ill be watching your post for any ideas.

I'm going to take it out later today and put it through its paces and see if it continues to give me problems. If so, my dealer said to bring it back. I'm going to do a swap out batteries, do a factory reset, and give it a go. I'll let you know how it goes.

hooked up with a friend with a atpro and his does the same thing..but it only started after we had 8 inches of rain ,,during the super dry spell in nw ohio,,it was pretty quiet..the ground is very wet now and the it chatters more with wet ground...doesn't seem to be broken just ground conditions have really changed...more mineralized..and with so mch trash in my yard its impossible to have a quiet machine..good luck gregginohio

Well, I took it out this afternoon for about 20 minutes or so with the 5x8 coil and had zero problems with it. I have not tried the stock coil yet. But so far so good. Will be interesting to see how it operates after being on for an hour or so.

Okay, I've narrowed it down to this. In Pro Mode (the only mode I'll use), Zero works great. If I try to bump up the iron disc or use Custom, or Coin, the scratchy audio issue occurs. Every time, with both coils, in four different spots. Not coincidence.

It is with audio iron on or off that you're experiencing this problem? Also try in the mode that you are having problems point your coil up in the air, and see if problem persist. I'm beginning to think you have a bad control box
