AT Pro Battery Drain

Active member
Just thought I would throw this out there for those who may not use their ATP for a few weeks or more. I've noticed more then once where I have put in a new set of batteries, hunted one day with the ATP, then not used it for 2-3 weeks, and when I did that my batteries were now reporting as dead. That would indicate to me that even with the ATP off, that it is still for some odd reason draining the batteries. Best to take the battery pack out after each hunt (at least it's an easy one to pop out).

Anyone else seen this?

BTW I've been using it to hunt some super trashy iron infested old west ghost towns and have been making some nice finds. I was thinking about sending in some photos to the Garrett newsletter.

Brian , would you please post your photos here, I, and I'm sure all the other guys on the forum would like to see them.

Re- battreries,I use rechargeable and remove them after every hunt.

NiMH batteries seem to do that. They work great if charged up right before using, but not so much after sitting for 2 - 3 weeks. Having said that, I just bought some for my At Pro. Just won't let them sit after charging.

I'm not using rechargeable batteries (although I probably will switch to them down the road, as I've used them a lot in the past).

I'm using Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries, Energizers top of the line AA's. In my F75 I can get about 45 hours out of a fresh set of four. I suspect the performance to be similar in the ATP, as long as you remove the battery pack after each days use.

Not seeing that on mine, just use plain old batteries. I'm getting about 25 hours on a set, using it for 3-4 hours, once a week.

No problem with batteries.
I don't even use the better batteries just use the
non alkaline el cheapos Super Heavy Duty can be bought
cheap for $4 or less for a pack of 48.
When they reach the second to first bar just insert new ones.
Have a places to dispose of these at a recycling depot.

Duracell is a local plant here and I know several that work there.Don't put too much faith in paying more for better name brands.Duracell makes Rayovac in the same plant...same battery as a duracell only sold cheaper in the stores.

I use cheap rechargeables and have not noticed that at all. They tend to drain on their own anyways, so if there was any type of drain on the batteries with the unit shut off, they would be dead very quickly. But that has not happened. Maybe you have one bad cell in your bunch?

Using the same batterys that came with it. I bought it in January, only used it about 10-15 hours never took out the batterys.Still have 2 bars on batt. symbol.

I use a couple of sets of NiMH rechargeables and when it gets down to 1 bar I switch em out. The only drawback with NiMH is they are only 1.2 volts so it doesn't take long to drop down to 3 bars but will stay at 3 bars for a good long time. Currently mine are on 3 bars with at least 15 hours on them... Another nice thing about NiMH is they don't develop a memory like NiCad's so they can be safely recharged without completely discharging them...

I use the cheap dollar store brand batteries but I do get the alkaline as recommended and I don't have that problem at all and as for performance I have bought the more expensive ones and haven't found to be that much better for the price diff.
I get out when I can but with this heat it's not often right now maybe once a week for an hour or so but the batts don't seem to be going down sitting and I never take them out except maybe in the winter months when I know I'm not gonna be getting out.

I just bought 2 chargers and the better Energizer rechargeable batteries from Home Depot. I have used them for
about 6 hours and they are on 2 bars.

My hunting buddy uses dollar store batteries and says he gets the same life as with Duracell for a buck a pack. I will give these
rechargeables a shot and let you folks know what I find in about a week . I hunt at least 3 hours per day.

If any of you night hunt, go to Harbor Freight and get the led cap light. It works AWESOME and last for ever on
one little battery. I can light up half the park with only 1 LED on.
