AT Pro at the Beach? Take 2...

Thought I'd dredge this question up again since I didn't get an answer before. (Get it.. "dredge" ) :)

Do any of you use the AT Pro in surf? With the leak issues in fresh water, I'd imagine the higher temps of the sun and often very quick and varying water temps in the tide, sand and salt might wreak havoc on the thing. Judging by the natural disasters this year in the rest of the country, I'm guessing we're gonna have a brutal hurricane season. Would be great to hit the beach if I survive :) .

I have a friend on padre island texas who hunts every day in the surf and is making some amazing discoveries with his ATPro. No leaks :)

Thanks, Jerry :). I haven't done much water hunting. Going to try and perfect my scoop underwater technique in stable fresh water before moving on to fighting the tides...

Use mine in the surf with no issues, just set the sensitivity at 4 bars and go -2 from what you get with auto GB. with these settings I get very little chirping unless I bump the sand hard.

How many of you actually submerge the unit for hours on end? When you say "surf".....do you mean splashing waves on the unit?

Last Sunday, I spent about 3 hours in a freshwater lake with my AT control box submerged most of that time. No problems.

I think the most ive gotten out of the two units that i have had is about 30hrs underwater each......hmm Hope its not me!

By "surf" I mean dunking or submerging the control box at the beach. Garrett doesn't recommend the AT Pro for "surf" but I don't know what that means exactly. I was just curious to see how many people dunk their boxes at the beach.

So what your saying is that the added pressure from a wave splash/surge is not recommended? Maybe it possibly exceeds the pressure of the ATPro submertion of 10 feet or less?

About thirty hours max under water before it needs to go back in for repair seems about right.

Good Hunting

I have been out 3 x lake hunting with it submerged and 3 x hunts in the rain + in the shower for a nice rinse and it still works fine.

Actually, I'm just wondering if the ocean environment will affect the AT Pro more harshly because of the salt, waves, and the way ocean water can be cold one moment and warm the next and alternating between temps.

The box gets dunked a lot, every time I dig a target I let it float. The only issue after 4 months is the connectors are gummed up and won't unscrew easily. Maybe some Teflon tape could prevent it.

interesting post,im headed for atlantic city for a sat hunt then down the east coast stopping at different beachs to florida and im taking my atpro along with my excal and etrac,so im gonna get mine into the surf and ive been wondering the same question,i guess ill find out,ill post my findings along our way at each beach we hit..:detecting::clapping:

where are you located at? waves are cold and then warm? pretty constant here in NJ, more depends on the time of year for temps.

My friend Steve Hathcock is a noted historian about spanish treasure in and around padre island texas. if you have any questions about the ATPro in salt water he will be happy to talk to you about it. you can call him at 956-238-9500 he is pretty good with it in salt water.

Vinnie are you finding stuff? if yes how and where? im also trying it on the surf but i dont find anything and i was wondering if because of the lowered sens (to make it run stable) depth is reduced too much to find stuff that sinks a lot like gold.

I see you also get false signals when hitting the ground. My last unit didnt false when hitting the ground, i could even drop sand on it from the scoop and then hit the ground to quit the sand with out getting falsing. It seems these at pros are never gonna work at 100%.

well i have made it to Florida, started in Columbus went east to Atlantic city then south..Ive hit a bunch of beaches and have used excal and at pro, haven't used at pro in water yet,i wasn't sure about the neg GB,just saw a video and now i know how to set neg GB,so in am were hitting south beach,so at pro will get wet now..
