At Pro air test - TID readings on deeper targets

Wanted to see how stable the TID numbers were on deeper targets. I know that targets in the ground may be a different story. Notice the depth reading seemed to be off by two inches on most targets.

I like those TID numbers but looks like the At Pro works like the ACE250 as for as the depth reading goes. Try it in the pinpoint mode. The depth indication will probably be more accurate in the pinpoint mode than when actually detecting like the ACE 250. When detecting with my ace, I don't pay any attention to the depth indication until I am in the pinpoint mode. On my GTI 1500, I only get a depth indication when I'm in the pinpoint mode and it's very accurate.

When we finally get some good weather and the snow melts I will pay attention to the readout in pinpoint mode. Its really no big deal to me I just happen to noitce it.

Depth measurement accuracy drops off as you go deeper.....all my machines do this. Depth measurement is also a probablity based on a targets size, it's orientation to the coil, masking, soil mineralization and depth just to name some of them. Both depth and discrimination abilities can be off for the previous reasons. There is no metal detector yet developed that will accurately give both depth and discrimination. If someone is trying to sell you one saying it is 100% accurate....you had better starting running.:smoke:

I going to deffer with you two, First I don't think he was saying it's dead on accurate, he was just showing how well it did and I thought it did a excellent job. I like ID numbers and depth readings, it gives you more information
If it's not accurate or any good why do they put them on a detector? I know that's not how you two hunt But I do. I don't find it to be a crap shoot, just more information. I think everybody knows if it sounds good dig it.

it was a excellent video and I learned a lot from it.

I dont think I ever even mentioned anything about how accurate the TID numbers were. I thought they were pretty good though. I know just because a detector will air test good means nothing. It is the in ground performance that counts. So far the AT Pro has been acceptable with what little testing I have gotten to do with it. It does seem pretty accurate in my ground except for the bottlecaps of course.

I do kind of rely on the TID and sound. If I was going to just "dig it all" as some people say then I wouldnt need one with TID and sounds. That is the whole idea of having them......:)

Bill, I enjoyed your air test. I can't see it at work as YOU TUBE is blocked, so I just made a comment about the accuracy about the TID, more for the newer people getting into the hobby. A lot of people really get hung up on a penny reading as a dime, a gold ring reading as a pull tab and another gold ring reading as a quarter. I was just pointing out that there are limitations to the accuracy.

Your air tests showed quite a stability in the numbers for the deeper depths. I was impressed. I really enjoyed the PRO mode, as you could hear the audio go more faint as the target got further from the coil. Some of the Garrett lines amplify the weaker signals, so that they all have the same volume, regardless of depth, even though there are usually subtle audio differences you learn with experience. It was a well layed out test too. Posting the coins in the left upper corner of the screen really made the tests clear of what was being tested. A great over all presentation.

Thanks John. I knew what you meant and did not take it the wrong way. You were just commenting about TID in general. I am looking forward to getting outside and doing some real tests.

My comment has nothing to do with the gentleman's excellent test and results It is very informative. All I'm saying is that no detector made or ever made is 100% accurate on ID or depth readings.
