At pro 5x8coil or NeL

Hey all I'm looking in the next couple weeks at buying an AT pro. i'm looking at getting the small 5x8 coil and possibly a larger coil bigger than stock (something for fields) IS the Nel coils any better than stock or does it matter?

The bigger the coil, the deeper the target as a rule of thumb. You start to run into problems however, when there are several targets under the coil, which can mask each other and totally block a deeper target, or change the ID characteristics of targets. Also, if using the coil over high mineralized dirt, you have to turn the sensitivity down, or risk losing depth or again ID characteristics that the machine is giving you. There is nothing wrong with switching to a larger coil, just use it in the right conditions and make the setting changes to your advantage.

I have two NEL coils. One, the Sharpshooter, which is actually 5.5 x 9.5" that I use on my A T Pro. I also have the Hunter NEL for my Omega and it is the next size up from the stock 11" coil for both the A T and Omega. On the Omega, I do get a little better depth then I did with the 11" stock coil. But, this Omega is a later version then the other one I had. But, don't know if that makes any difference as I don't have a 11" stock coil to compare both. I really like the Sharpshooter on my A T as I get good depth with it. Having said that, my buddy has the stock 5 x 8" coil on his A T Pro and thus far I haven't dug any deep targets that he can't hear with his. And thus far those targets were in the 7-8" depth range. The NEL coils are made very well, but are heavier. The Garrett 5 x 8 is like swinging a feather. For field hunting a larger coil is nice for more coverage and some extra depth. HH jim tn
