AT Pro 5x8 or 8.5x11 coil?

I would like to see some opinions on the 5x8

they are both DD and as such function the same. someone correct me if im wrong. i have been very pleasantly surprised by the smaller coil. it has surprising depth. and is super great at isolating targets in those junky areas. it's shocking to go over areas where you have hammered and just start picking out coin after coin. shocking, but fun!

For trashy areas, hunting in the woods and playgrounds, get the 5 x 8.

For large areas, not too much trash get the 5.5 x 11.

Both are "DD"s and both have excellent depth capabilities, partially due to the blunted toe and heel of the coil. Both coils do a fine job isolating silver coins out of trashy area, with the 5 x 8 having an advantage over the larger coil for trash separation, due to it's smaller size.

The 5x8 is actually a narrower long line (8 inches)) of field ....the 11 inch a little wider and of coarse 11 inches . The smaller coil works better in trashier areas but the deep loss is minumal..HH

Well thanks all, both coils are the same except for size. That link pretty much said it all, the only thing left is why the little one cost more than the big one. Maybe it is a little harder to make.

I took the AT and both coils over to my brothers test garden and both coils hit every coin from 3" to 8" his deepest. The ID reading was a little more stable with the 8.5 x 11 coil on the nickels.

I learned the quirks of the Pro on the 8 x 11 coil, I personally feel it locks on targets better but my opinion might be jaded as I don't have the experience others do on the smaller coil. But for trashy areas you need that small coil and there are alot of trashy areas. I have read that some dig everything the first couple hours, just out of curiosity how do you dig everything when there is a signal every 2-3" in every direction?

The 5x8 coil is great for parks or trashy areas. No big difference in depth between the two coils on coin sized objects. As this pic shows, depth is not a problem with the 5x8 coil. This wheatie was found next to a soccer field. The only old coin to come out of this area. The 5x8 is great for getting rid of screw tops too. The larger coil does great on the beach and relic hunts.

I hunt a lot of older home sites in my community that seem to have a good amount of trash and I use the 5 x 8 only. I also use it when there is a lot of vegetation. On the other hand, I have detected a couple larger open sites that I have switched over to the stock coil. I also feel the 5 x 8 is a much easier coil to swing. So I like having both for different scenarios.

Thanks
Denis

The 5-8 for me, I found that I can pinpoint easier and agree with everyone about trashy areas.
Good luck

Ditto with the opinions of others. Both are excellent and worth owning.

I prefer the 5"x8" for most general hunting situations and being older dude I also find it to be noticeably lighter, less fatiguing and most of all... Just more fun. :bouncy:

Off topic a bit but ... Heck, I still love using the sniper coil on my Ace 250 (my dedicated sniper detector LOL).

Thanks, that pic was helpful. I am so on the fence about getting the smaller coil because I'm loath to give up any depth capability. But the big coal still puts my hand to sleep now and then.

I put the 5x8 on my Pro about 10 months ago and never took it off or went back to the stock 8.5x11 again. It's the best little DD coil. Forgot to mention I even sold the stock because I was so please with the small coil.

When I first got my 5 X 8 coil for the At/Pro I didn't like it. When I sent it in to Garrett when my At/Pro sprang a leak, they found it to be defective. It's my main coil now and has found some small ear rings with diamonds that I might have missed with the stock coil. I really like this coil. Combine this coil with my scoop modification and I can find and retrieve some very small targets I might have missed before. I do get better trash/target separation with the stock coil and it may be because I learned on it first. I got up against the wall at the river made out of concrete and rebar and found a 18K ring amongst about 7 other trash targets. Just that little whisper of sound let me know there was a good target hiding among the trash. I also seem to get nearer metal fences and rebar with the stock coil than the 5 X 8 even with lowered sensitivity. It's a strong little coil and I use it almost all the time now.

I just got a 5X8 coil recently and I think it is great!

I have no plans on taking it off anytime soon. I like the better seperation from junk, the no noticible loss of depth, and for sure the lightness.

It almost feels like there is nothing on the end of the shaft. I could swing the 5X8 all day for sure. It is definitely a Winner!!

I think my stock coil is going to get a lot of shelf time.

Depends on where you hunt.

The 5x8 is my personal favorite and even works very well in trashy areas once you get the hang of pinpointing.

I still like the 8.5x11 in a big open (not trashy) field simply because of the larger coverage. I do find the 8.5x11 to be more fatiguing but that may just be me getting to old..

I just got a 5X8 coil a few weeks ago. I have no plans on putting the stock coil back on.

I feel it gets down as far as the stock coil and being so light, it.s a pleasure to swing. :clapping: :)

I used the stock coil last Tuesday and it was the first time in about 6 months or more, just can't remember. I had a terrible time pinpointing with it, but when I swapped it with the 5 X 8 coil Saturday, had the same problem. Usually with the 5 X 8 coil it's in the scoop the first time, but I was really struggling the last few times I got out and don't know if it's me or the machine. Probably me, but I was out in the fresh air and dirt fishing so that was good.
