Been metal detecting off and on for over 20 yrs. I have used many machines and currently use a fisher cz3d.I wanted a machine that's seperates better for trashy areas. Was ready to pull the trigger on the atpro but decided to instead pre order the at max. What settings should I use and would the small garret coil or an after market shooter coil be best for trashy sites?

I use the 5 x 8 DD Garrett coil with my AT Pro and AT Gold, and it works GREAT for trashy sites.

I go with the larger 8.5 x 11 DD coil and the 9 x 12 Concentric coil for the Beach or non trashy sites.

Love the better target separation with the DD coils and the slightly better target ID with the concentric coils.

Less masking with the smaller 5 x 8 coil and the target separation is VERY good.

Depending on the soil mineralization, you should not have any problems reaching down about 6 to 8 inches with the smaller coil. Maybe a hair more in fairly neutral soil.

I have highly mineralized soil, tends to auto ground balance in the 88-92 range and I've hit dimes at 6", quarters at 8" using the 5 x 8 DD coil.

The 5x8 is a super sniping coil in iron and trash. I love mine and 99% of the time I leave it on my AT Pro.
Settings: I use Pro Mode, Zero Notching, iron disc I vary depending on the amount of iron encountered. I usually try to keep it between 0 - 28.
AT Max - I feel it is going to be a fun machine with a nice little boost in the depth department.

My hunting ground has very little mineralation.

I would suggest you run it as hot as possible with that 5 x 8 coil. I have heard high tones from pennies under bottle caps. Swing that coil in different directions, at different speeds to squeeze a high tone from a high conductor masked target. Run in zero discrimination (not true all metal mode) with iron audio turned on and the iron setting to about 30. And as previously mentioned, run that sensitivity as high as you can. You may also turn your ground balance numbers down a few digits to increase sensitivity to high conductors.

If you hunt in true all metal mode, you will squeeze a little more depth, and you can still utilize the iron audio, however, you lose the ability of the detector to give you high tones. The true all metal mode would probably excel for relic hunting (good depth and iron ID) or gold nugget hunting ( use audible threshold +iron audio to help eliminate junk). If you soil is mild which you mention, don't overlook the 9 x 12 concentric coil. It get gret depth and very good discrimination abilities, especially for bottle caps & twist tops, even without the iron audio turned on.

Hope this helps.

Helped very much. I am partial to concentric coils.
