AT Gold

Well, I read through quite a bit from this forum and also watched all of the AT Gold (and Pro) videos from the Garrett site - quite informational. I am pretty sure that the AT Gold is the way I will go. At first, I was looking at the Deus XP but price kind of scared me (even if it can be made into two detectors) and certain videos on Youtube make it look a bit weak. That was when I found out about the Deeptech Vista Smart (and Gold) but I kind of rather have some display to mess around with. Maybe eventually I will go with an all dial system.

Part of metal detecting is to have fun, learn a bit of history on fines, and of course to make some money along the way. After leaving the idea of getting a Deeptech I took some time to research about the Fisher F75se. I tried to look up some videos to compare the AT Gold and Pro with the Fisher F75se. There just doesn't seem to be too much convincing to go with the Fisher - waterproof is just too important. Actually quite amazing that the entire unit can be dunked into water.

Being in Canada, it probably won't be that likely to come across that many American coins so the AT Pro just doesn't seem to be the right one for me. The All-Metal and Iron Audio seems quite nice on the AT Gold. I just wish I could test an AT Gold or even the Pro in person before going out go buy one. What do you guys think?

From the land of the Bluenose.....is a good machine and I had my reservations at first. Having said that mine does not see water and still prefer my Seahunter MK11. Good luck on whatever you choose and be one with your machine sir. Have a great day.

That video is bogus. How bad, I don't know. But he would not run the AT Gold in All Metal on that gold nugget. What's he afraid of?

Some companies are famous for hype and propaganda, and putting down other machines. Others are trying to copy that.

Man I love my AT Pro it has the best audio of any detector I have ever owned!! I seldom look at the screen and just detect by ear! If I were you that's what I'd go with it has a vdi number readout so it don't matter what country your using it in!! That's unless you plan on looking for gold with it and then the AT-Gold would get the nod with true all metal capabilities.

I live in Canada and I specifically ordered the standard ATPro instead of the ATPro International, FANTASTIC detector! I think if I lived in Europe I would get the ATPro International.

Me and my Son both have AT Golds and they are great, if you like to hunt in all metal mode it will go deep, and the VDI is pretty darn accurate, I have dug mini balls at over 10in.

if you want depth and a threshold get the gold. if you like to use more disc when hunting get the pro. I personally sold my pro and use the gold and it was the right deciesion for me. when i had the pro I only ran it in pro zero as I am not much on discing stuff out and in my soil in my test garden, the gold in disc1 wensitivity 1 bar from max will hit a silver dime buried at 8" whereas my pro wouldnt even sniff if in pro zero with max sensitivity. This is with both having the 8.5x11 coil on. Just my personal experience and you should really try to test them for yourself if possible before buying as there are many factors which will determine which machine is the best for you...

I agree with you about wanting to try out a detector before making a purchase. I believe the dealers should have a demonstrator model of each detector they sell, much like car dealers have. Then have a test garden where you can get the feel of how the detector works. Kind of like trying on a pair of shoes before buying. That sure would eliminate all of the hype. Everyone would know what they are getting before they buy it.

Who knows maybe in the near future testing machines might become a trend. If it did happen I can assure you that this will leave nothing to hide for every company making hobby detectors and dispel any rumors about certain capabilities on specific machines. Only the best of the best will survive, and at the end of the day that's what we the customers want at a good price
Cheers!

Funny, but financial gain was never a motivator for me. I already have a deep seeking relic machine and basicly wanted a stronger ACE 250 so that I could relax and hunt by sound. To be honest I wasn't impressed with my indoor air tests, but I will wait and see what my Pro does outside in the real world.

As you may have seen by the posts on this and other forums, there are a lot of people using the AT Pro. The lack of negative comments should put your mind at ease that this machine is a quality unit that has a tremendous ability to detect all kinds of treasure. I have several high end detectors and the AT Pro is still one of my go to detectors.

I prefer the AT Pro for general hunting using the 9" x 12" concentric coil, due to its large footprint and deadly pinpointing off the inner front toe of the coil. I don't care for the true all metal on the gold, mode unless I am hunting in the woods or an area with few targets. The AT Gold should serve you well though. Here are my finds from the last couple of years mostly with the AT Pro.

The end decision will be yours and yours only. I researched for a detector that had specific features and benefits for my needs and discovered the AT Pro. One of the criteria was not promises but actual results posted from actual users of the detector. No one can argue the point the AT Pro gets results. I found it to be a great performing machine both on land and under water. It exceeded my expectations in both numbers and quality of my finds, for my type of hunting. I'm sorry, but I didn't see the type of hunting you would be spending the majority of your time doing. I would have to agree with you about not being to "test drive" before you buy. I reckon that leaves faith. The question I must present to you is this; Do you have enough faith in the AT Pro to help you get what you want? Have others using the AT Pro got those results you are hoping to get? Good luck and happy hunting.

Loonies are the one Canadian $1 coin and the toonies are the $ 2.00 coin

, what is loonies and toonies?[/quote]

It is a toss up for me. I've been wondering if the notching feature matters much on the Pro. Does the threshold feature of the Gold matter much? Is the All Metal / Iron Audio exactly the same on both units? What is the difference between the standard AT Pro and the AT Pro International. The International version seems to be the one offered here at a local store. How about the window ground balancing of the Gold - useful? I'm really curious if the Gold is much of an improvement over the Pro to make it worthwhile for the slight increase in cost. I have yet to make a final decision before the snow melts here.

I am far from salt water beaches and probably won't be traveling to one anytime soon. I don't have a real preference on what I'd be hunting. Of course, I'd love to find some rings or other jewelry. I don't really want to be notching things out due to possibly avoiding good items. Is there really a good enough purpose for it? Couldn't I just ground balance over a pulltab to avoid detecting them?

For me the at gold. I have owned both detectors and am currently using the at gold as one of my detectors.

Why? It will do almost everything the at pro will do and more. All you lose is the notch feature....and standard mode which no one uses anyways. Salt water beaches?? havent tried the gold there yet but I was not that impressed with at pro on salt beach..I have another detector for that purpose.

The gold comes stock with the 5x8 coil which is awesome (getting in tight areas, finding stuff next to iron and for pinpointing) and if you run it in all metal you will get the same depth if not better than the at pro with larger stock coil. Even better depth if you bump up the threshold.

So for me the gold works better....I stilll have the tone roll audio and iron audio plus a threshold and a ground balance window with the ability to find small gold better. I have a unit that I dont have to swap coils out...I get fantastic depth and it works great for working in iron infested trashy areas. I do lose some sweep coverage but thats a tradeoff that works for me.

With the gold I cant selectively take out notches but I rarely did anyway. It has nice preset features and with the ability to set tone ID's and use the vdi at a glance. I tend to dig most all good signals as I dont want to miss jewelery and the tone roll and iron audio help weed out the bad ones.

For water hunting you will want the smaller coil...trust me. It makes life alot easier when you go for it with your scoop. The small difference in frequencies isnt much and I have not noticed any difference really.

The at pro in my opinion would be an easier unit to start with as you could use standard mode at first....although you will move past it quick and never use it again. And the display showing coin ranges is helpful to a new detectorist as well.

Once you gain experience the gold has more options to aid you in the field but could be daunting for a new detector user.

My opinions only...hope this helps.
