AT Gold Threshold changes an octave?

Here is what I am hearing. I set the threshold on my AT Gold to say 1. GB the machine, Discrim 1 pattern or 2.

I will be walking along, swinging the coil, and suddenly, I hear the THRESHOLD tone change an octave upward, and then return to normal. It is NOT a hit per se, and it is definitely not one of the three tones associated with a target, but I am wondering IF it IS indicating some response to a really deep signal?

Anyone else hearing that tone change? Any idea on WHY it is doing this and what it indicates?

Thanks,

Dennis

Maybe a change in the ground mineralization in that spot. Next time maybe switch to discrimination mode, zero discrimination and see if it picks up a deep target or not.

He said he was using discrimination 1. I have never heard of this condition, I am interested to hear what is the cause

Just as an addendum, My ground here in Texas is very mild. I have contacted Garrett, and left a message for a call back, when the first two people didn't have a clue, and sent me to a more expereienced representative. I am swinging an AT Gold, and it has happened enough times, that it has my attention. I've done this hobby a long time, and the nuances of each machine I have used has brought me a lot of good finds through the decades.

Since I just got the Gold recently, I want to make sure that it is not an anomaly that is the result of some defect. I will be relieved to find it to be some minor variation in Mineralization......I just want to find out if I am the only one experiencing this sound on the Gold. Since no one here has spoken up other than the one mineralization comment, it makes me wonder a bit.....

I will document the occurences and post what information I get from Garrett, if any. It could be a really deep target that is not setting off the meter or one of the three tones the machine puts out. It could be that, but it is unlike any change I have ever heard in my 41 years doing this.

I hope it is telling me that there is a gold hoard.....LOL but I bet not.....to be continued......

I don't know. The threshold in Disc 1 or 2 is not the same as in All Metal. There's going to be a few stray blips from bumping the coil, or what. If it's not repeatable it's probably just some noise, maybe interference. I recall when aircraft take off nearby I would get a beep on an old detector. The worst interference I've gotten on the Gold was near a malfunctioning street light but it was continuous. Interference would be my guess from some electrical device nearby. Manual says to reduce sensitivity, readjust ground balance, change frequency, etc. Of course check for loose wire connections at control box and at coil. Flat battery will create some issues. I carry a cell phone and have never had any issues. I've had weak interference within three feet of telephone boxes, but i could still detect.

It's not that faint, but higher pitch hit that a small rust spot often produces, is it? However, those usually repeat until some dirt is removed from the spot. HH jim tn

I also swing an at gold and have never experienced this , that doesn't mean that it may not or does not exist . I would be very interested to hear more about this as there is aways more to learn .

I had the at gold out this weekend and made a point to run in disc 1 with a threshold and I experienced what u describe the threshold tone went up for about 3-4 seconds before returning to normal. I could hear something being discriminated out when this happens.

Sorry didn't get back any sooner on this. The detector processor does an overload when it hits that higher octave threshold tone. If you go back over the spot you will not get a repeatable signal. You probably already figured this out when you dig there is nothing there.
