AT Gold- AT Pro interchangeable coils ??

SWMO Mark

New member
I have seen different people say the AT Gold and AT Pro coils are interchangeable. I would think that you wouldn't get the best performance from your detector putting a PRO coil on a GOLD or vice versa, since the Pro operates at 15khz and the Gold 18khz. Has anyone done any testing to see how much if any performance is lost making this type of coil swap? Thanks, Mark

I have both detectors. I haven't done any testing, but I do good with both detectors with either coil on them. Depending where I'm detecting. trashy area small coil and picks through the trash great. JMO

I have used both the 9" x 12" concentric and the 8.5" x 11" DD on both and I didn't notice any difference. Although the frequencies are off by 3 numbers, I am sure the engineers designed both machines to accept both coils and operate at peak performance.

I have the 5 by 8 coil on my AT Pro and it works great. Shortly after I bought it I dug a quarter and an incredible Depth. The 5x8 coil is not comming off any time soon.

They are transferable. Different frequencies do not mean you need different coils necessarily. Also, I would imagine that Garrett would not want to anger their customers by telling them that 2 Mds that look almost identical need to use different coils. Not good business sense there.

Hey Mark I have both coils and they work great. I don't see how Teknetics is able to change from 18khz down to 7.8khz on their machines and them work right.

They are the same coils. Meaning you cannot tell the difference between a 5x8 DD that came off a AT Gold or one that you bought for your AT Pro. The 5x8 DD along with all the rest of the coils that say "AT" on them are made the same way on the same manufacting line.

I'm thinking that the control unit determines the frequency (Pro-15KHZ, Gold-18KHZ), and the coil is rated for a specific frequency range, which in this case, includes both detectors. Now I'm an electrician, not an engineer, so this is only a guess. Artie

Thanks Artie, I visited Garrett's website, they have a range of coils for the AT Gold, I am looking for a coil to cover more ground than my standard 5 x 8" coil, its great for overgrown and hard to reach areas but not the best for open field work.
