At first I thought "clad quarter"...but then I realized I better double that and go back 141 years

I was certainly not expecting this today! A very good friend of mine ( fwcrawford ) encouraged me to go back to this area after finding an old glass bottle a few months ago. I realized this morning (in talking with fwcrawford) the bottle was from a much older time period then I thought. (The glass bottle dates to time period 1860-1880.) So I figured I would just "fool around" at this hunting spot as I have hunted this (as many others as well) a gazillion times. A lot of this area has been filled in (a good 4-5 feet deep) with gravel and rocks which really makes me sad  I obviously stay away and headed towards a steep decline and hunted a nearby hillside. Towards the end of my three hour tour, I straddle / climb over a fallen tree and as I was bringing my detector coil down towards the ground I got a TID of 28. (I hunt with a Minelab Equinox 800) Swept some more and the TID climbed to 33. "Hmmmm I thought to myself, "self, could this be a quarter?" I dug into the ground and approximately an 1 1/2" into the soil, out pops my first ever Seated Half Dollar from 1878!

Thanks fwcrawford for telling me to get off my duff

Probably would help if I posted the picture of my find

WOW! WOW!WOW! What a beautiful coin, still on my bucket list. Sounds like you were hunting in the woods. We've been hunting the woods hard this year and I'm a firm believer this is where the old silver is laying. We've found several nice silver coins in the woods and like you they aren't that deep.

Oh boy , that was sweet !

Wonderful find. I'm still looking after 45 years. Maybe tomorrow!

Thank you everyone.

I never use to hunt the woods but now it is my go-to spots. Many don't want to or can't climb hills, ravines, steep embankments etc. however this is where I am making some of my best finds.
Once wooded areas could of been old homes, farms, communities long forgotten. Just never know.
I was shocked to see how shallow the coin was. Only goes to show, old coins aren't necessarily deep.
Thanks for looking. - Jim

I've been thinking who could have lost that coin and it just dawned on me who could have lost it. JESSE JAMES! That's about the time he was robbing all those banks.

Congrats on a very rare find !

Incredible find congratulations that's awesome. Its still on my bucket list, at least I have my bucket and clad out if the way.

Nice find. Still on my bucket list. Congratulations!

Thank you all for your kind words and comments. I will certainly remember the day I found this beauty.

Howdy earthlypotluck--

Congratulations on your FIRST Liberty Seated Half! I hope that there are more to follow. In 35 years of detecting, I've only dug 1 - a very worn 1867-S, so I know the thrill that you experienced when you first saw that seated figure! Best of luck and...

Happy Hunting!

Thank you Blind Squirrel. I wish I could find more of them!
