Assist me in finding a complementing detector for my Sovereign GT

JimmyCT

Well-known member
Many of you are aware that the Minelab Sovereign GT is a slow scanning / "slow recovery" machine with (which I feel) has good target seperation & "see-through / next to" iron abilities / with its iron mask feature. I love the detector's features & abilities and would not trade / sell it for anything. I am throwing the thought around of fulfilling my inner human needs by complementing the Sov GT for a fast(er) scanning / superior target seperation / recovery / good iron "see through / next to" capabilites metered metal detector that is lightweight. Multiple tones are important to me as well as I have some hearing loss in the high frequency range. (I can still hear them, it is just much more difficult for me)

I just ask that everyone be courteous of others (and their reviews) as this posting is to help me to find a total opposite detector that will fulfill my needs on the other end of the detecting spectrum. I know there are many that have and use multiple detectors and can help. Thanks for reading and look forward to your responses. - Jim aka earthlypotluck

If you feel you don't want to publicly make a statement on this posting you can most certainly send me a PM as well.

I mainly hunt school yards, parks, cellar holes, fields, homesteads etc. for coins and jewelry.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2012!

Jim, the X-Terra line of detectors are worth looking at.. with all the available coils now offered, this detector if very versatile.
Another plus is that they are lightweight, and only use 4 AA batteries and they last very long.
Check'em out!

Will do Felix! - Jim

Take a look at the T2 SE ..............

I have a GT but much prefer my MXT Pro for coins and Jewerly unless I'm at the beach on the wet sand.

I think that if you are after a metered detector that is light and extremely fast responding i would have to agree with Elton....look at the T2.These machines have gained an excellent reputation over here in England for searching our ancient sites for small coins in iron infested areas.I think that with the T2 and sovereign you can cover all your detecting needs...these are two of the best detectors available today.Whatever you choose i hope you get many finds with it.
Regards,Neil.

Thank you for the recommendations. Now I have some homework to do.

EPL i have a whites 5900 di pro-analog with meter that i feel compliments the gt and excal very well...it gets great depth ,meter,is not multi toned and can be swung at a much faster speed.... i feel it is a great machine for parks, playgrounds and schools, dry sand beach and open field hunting.....truth be told i have found more gold with the 5900 than the gt and excal combined, but having said that the gt and excal have also served me well.....i have seen the F-5 in action and it also seemed to do very well as it seems to have precision ground balance ,but i did not use one myself..... good luck in your quest....

Hi Bootyhoundpa,

sounds like the Whites 5900 Di is quite a machine. I will add it to my list for review. Thanks for chiming in. - Jim

OMEGA 8000........that will fit the need. Very deep with 11" DD...superfast recovery on co-located targets....and super stable target ID. I owned the White's and T2..used the Xterra (hunting buddy's). Omega will smoke them. IMHO.

Terradigger,
are you saying the omega 8000 is much more stable in ID'ing and quicker recovery then the other detectors listed? What model white's and xterra are you comparing the omega 8000 to? I am intrigued since you have used several different detectors. Thanks for your input. - Jim

White's 6000di Series 3 (same machine as 5900di, just one extra added function), White's Silver Eagle (really a Spectrum without the fancy programming), the White's have excellent ID. Xterra 70 (really nose heavy), Its an ok unit. Nothing spectacular about it.
Put the 11" DD on the Omega and it will be as fast as the T2 in target seperation....that is straight from First Texas Products. Also with 11" it is about the same as T2 in handling severe mineralization. Its almost as deep as T2 with 11" DD attached. The 11" DD really turns it into a super perfomer over its stock concentric. The Omega is the only Greek series detector that really gets transformed by the use of the 11" DD. The other Teknetics machines don't show as great an improvement with DD. think now First Texas is selling the Omega with the 11" DD coil instead of the 10" stock concentric, if thats what the customer wants. Costs a few dollars more. Ask Bart @ Big Boy's Hobbies or any forum sponsor that sells the Omega about that. Plus the Omega has a 5 yr warranty if you buy from authorized dealer. Weighs only 2.9 pounds. Thats my two cents. Go to the Teknetics forum. Ask some of the guys that hunt with it.

Thank Terradigger! You provided me with some valuable info. Much appreciated - Jim

I will throw in the the G2/Gold Bug Pro/DP for hunting trashy sites. I find the depth isn't bad. Hit's good on my 7 1/2" dime and 8" quarter in my test garden.

I really like the xterra line. But like others have suggested all brands make a good one.

Thanks Rick N. MI & 7 centsworth for your thoughts. Now I need to figure out which detector has the closest qualities to what I am seeking to find: fast(er) scanning / superior target seperation / recovery / good iron "see through / next to" capabilites metered metal detector (compared to my Sov GT)
