Assembly Problem:confused:

I finally got into Dallas this morning and picked up my detector from the post office.
While putting it together I found a potential problem. The socket coming from the control box and the small
post it sits on has quite a bit of "play" in it. It seems like there may be loose screws inside the control box
holding the socket and post to the box. I have turned the detector on and it does come on.
It seems that the post should be tightly attached to the box. Is this normal? Has anyone else had this
problem and had to return for repairs? Thanks for any assistance.

I hope I understood what seemed lose to you.. If wrong sorry !!!

When looking at just the controll box...the silver socket which the coil attaches to....should the socket be loose enough that it moves from side to side
and up and down? Yes I am having trouble keeping the upper rod attached to the controll box with the coil attached as well and believe the loose socket
may be responsible....thanks...

Upper shaft goes in about 1 1/2 inch then flip the camlock, also note camlocks should be on bottom of the shaft! "SEE page 9 of the manual."

All the Explorers, quattros,Safaris and the E-Trac are this way with the connection being able to move quite a bit and feel they have to be like this so they dont break or crack something when putting the upper rod in and taking it out. This give it some extra play so nothing will get broke.
The Upper rod has to go into the control housing about a inch and a half until it stops, then lock it and it will hold the shaft tight. If not in all the way it will work lose when swinging the coil.

Good Luck with the E-Trac as it is one great detector and does very good.

You are justified in being concerned, while doing the loacl beach and at times clipping the tops of sand mounds from foot prints and the likes, I have had the shaft detach from the control box, I just unclip and re-insert. I raised the issue with ML herer in Australia and they asked to send it back, indicating the spring in the cam lock might not be functioning properly.

I would say just keep an eye on it and if you have the same problems like mine, she might be a warranty job.

I am fine with it now....very high quality machine...I just didn't want to force it too much and feared damaging a brand new detector at the price the Etrac goes for.
Thanks...

If you have had your shaft come loose from your control box, it may be inserted wrong. This happened to a buddies and he asked me to take a look at it. If you turn the shaft the wrong direction it will not slide it far enough to latch good.
