asking permission

New member
to tell you the truth i am very down about asking permission to hunt a persons home. iv'e been turned down half dozen times here lately and the people that i ask have been rude for me even asking, much less giving me permission to hunt. i think me and my son are going to stick to parks etc.. i can't get myself to do it anymore.

Wow..........I really haven't had that problem...I've only gotten turned down once, which was today b/c the lady is trying to sell her house....I wouldn't give up if I were you. Most people I've asked are curious to know what's in their yard.....Just my two cents worth.

it can get pretty rough out there! ive always felt that most people here in south florida where rude and ignorant, and after getting into this hobby and asking around for permission has only confirmed that my previous feelings where fact.

but i have also found that there can be funny times too. one place i went to the woman thought i was a ghost hunter and that my metal detector was a instrument for finding ghosts and that i could hear them thru my head phones! after about 5 minutes of that i just turmed around and laughed all the way home:rofl:

keep trying, just tell them your a ghost-buster!:detecting:

I always have a small chat with the owner. Then ask if I could scan their yard with my detector. I make sure that I'm cleaned up with decent clothes. Also don't take your detector, pouch or digger with you when you ask. When people ask me what I intend to find I never say coins or jewelry. I say that I mostly remove nails and pull tabs. If they ask if I ever find coins I say that I found 3 cents in the last yard. I don't mention holes or digging at all. If it comes up I say that I surgically remove my targets.

I think you're on to it Khouse.

You got to make a friend first.

Everybody is different in the way

They react to you. Don't make

Metal detecting the main thing.

It's usually a minor intrusion by

A friend. But some guy with

Funny tools and funny intentions

Can be seen as an unwanted pest.:poke:

Food for thought:|

You can also recruit your friends and spouse to ask people about detecting. Just the other day my wife was talking to one of her friends. I said to ask if I can detect their farm ( while she was talking - just like a little kid!) Here's how she said it " Oh Kenny wants to detect your yard?" She looked at me and said she said "any time" Then she went on talking. I asked my cabinet maker if he knew of any place to hunt. He said that he owned 2 old lots in his home town. I told him I had an extra detector for him. So off we went last Sunday. It was cold, muddy and rainy. I loaned him Ace 250. After about 20 minutes he dug an Indian. I dug a Franklin Half and silver spoon. We got wet and cold after about an hour. He also got the 250 all muddy. He couldn't keep his detector hand clean. I didn't care it will clean up. Yesterday he told me he got permission to hunt two other old properties. So networking is good. This gets other people to ask for you. This is just another angle to pursue.

Any little bit of an edge, to get your foot in the door, is far better than making a cold call and asking for something from a stranger.

There's GOT to be something in it for THEM...

If all you are offering them is entertainment value, in exchange for the trespass, have yourself prepped to make such a presentation.

Why not take the history angle? Mention that you've been researching the area and there was a hotel, camp, old house, whatever etc. nearby and you're looking for relics from it to put together a display. I seldom get turned down using the history angle. Of couse, you need to have done some research and be familiar with the area. People will know if you're feeding them a line. Even if you are just coin hunting, relics are always a possibility.

Just look at the mess at the Airports and other spots....It's become a nightmare.
It needs to be swung back the other way..it's getting ridiculous

:rant:figures some one would throw politics into the mix, i would have never thought that political @#$?&* would be brought up in this peacful hobby. thanks elton! :throw:

I am just saying people are a little more on the cautious side now....It closes some doors...

Just into the hobby and I aint asked no one yet,so I dont know how to go about it yet.As a Christian, you witness, and salesmen, you knock doors and stuff, one thing is for sure, you will be rejected and sometimes cussed off the property. But most of the time they reject in a nice way-no thanks and you walk away.

I talked to this one guy and he says he approaches the owner in clean clothes and with no gear the first time, small talk a tadd, then talks what he does and why he is inerested in hunting their land, and also take a few items to show them what might be there. If its a yard he never takes a shovel, just a small digger and probe. He tells them when he leaves you wont be able to tell he dug a hole. When they see thats true they wont mind him coming back again.

Hard to do I bet,but show them the findings and offer them something for thier generosity. If you find a $5000 ring,I'ld keep in the pocket though.Unless they mention something valueble they lossed.

hello topknocker, ive watched where your post has gone with interest and resisted saying anything until now. my personal approach has worked well for me for many years; i dont know how many other people do it like i do. i am constantly on the lookout for new places to go. its like a radar. when my hot spots start drying up in the winter, the time of year i do the least detecting, [i time it like that] i will spend a full day or two driving around in good clothes, fresh shave, and bright eyed and bushy tailed hahaha, dont laugh! and proceed to talk to as many people as i can in that couple day period, and quite often end up with hundreds of acres and many homesites to do. that would last me quite a while by any stretch of the imagination! that way i dont have to constantly worry about getting permission. why would a rejection or two bother me when i just went out and got five old homesites and ten acres of woods to hunt too? all in one fell swoop. a lot of people dont want you diggin up their yards, especially if its manicured in any way. if you live in a big city, go to the suburbs and work your way into town from a given point. people talk and word carries. as long as you come across as sincere, respectful of them and their property, and point out to the landowner that its just a hobby, not in it for personal gain, etc. you should have no trouble. quite often, theyll call their friends and recommend you. which leads to even more. it sounds to me like you want to hunt an area thats closed minded, old money,or, oh-my-god-hes-really-a-burglar type of place. theres probably nuthin there anyway, because theyre all too busy shunning the rest of the world and havent had time to lose anything!!! hahaha, gray ghost knows!!!

unfortunately we now live in a "fractured" society!..paranoia is everywhere!..we need to gain perspective on life, and realize the "boogy" man is NOT about to get us!

I agree. When I was a kid I could hunt the local parks at 12 by myself. Now there are gangs and needles all over the place. Before, you could talk with someone and they would be happy to let you in to detect. They were even happy for you to find something nice. Now it's a straight out NO, and if they let you in, they want everything you find. I have to agree that it's the world we have created that allows this to be. And if they call it politics - so be it.

Just go in and start detecting. If anybody says anything tell them to mind their own stinking business. If they try to start trouble just beat them with your shovel and bury them with it.

I think you all are paranoid!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I spit as of now.....:goodnight:

homeland security.......Bah humbug!!!!!!!!!

get to know your neighbors

I like khouse's choice of the word "scan" the yard...

has an interesting, harmless sound to it...

I have asked a farmr if I could relic hunt on his property now for five years. Everytime I see him, I ask him, and tell him I will not damage any property, and get a no answer. Well ask saw him agian last week, and of course I ask him again. He told me that I could have permission to hunt his fields, and in the yard. What a surprise!!! His property is just outside Wiiliamsburg Va., and the Federal army camped in the fields, and yard of the house that was built in the early 1800's. So far, I have found a pocket full of relics every day, and have only hunted a small portion of one field. So it pays to keep asking for permission.
