Went back to the old grown in park where I have previously found two other seated dimes. This time I went further in the woods (on a gut feeling) and hunted a steep hill for about five hours. I can certainly say I received an over abundance of exercise on this trip.

About 20 minutes of walking the side of this steep hill, I receive a beautiful sweet high tone with a TID=81. I even raised the coil a good 3" off the ground and still had a nice solid signal / high tone. You ever get that feeling that it's gonna be something good even before digging? That is the feeling I had on this target. Down approx. 5" out pops an 1882 Seated Dime! YEA! I thought to myself, my gut feeling paid off. :cheers:

I carefully descended and ran into a bunch of iron junk so I lowered my sensitivity to 3. I hit a nice solid high tone in with the iron snap, cracklin' and poppin'. I kicked the leaves down the hill and scanned the area again. Heard the iron but the high tone was gone. I scanned through the leaves I kicked and uncovered the wheat penny. Nice! Then I am thinking, "Finally! after spending 10 hours in the last two hunts (and not finding a thing) this is very welcomed!" I scanned up and down the hill for the several hours but found nothing else. Well, I did find something.... I believe we scared the poop out of each other. :rofl: We briefly stared at each other then went our separate ways.

Towards the end of my hunt I walked over to an old picnic area that I have hunted many times in the past. Received a high tone with no evidence indicating their was any iron there. However when I dug and found the Mercury dime, there was also a small chunk of iron in the hole with it.

I will say the wireless headphones are awesome!! Hunting hill sides like this is a pleasure not knowing I am tethered to the machine. I am FREE :rofl:

Very impressive outing. I like the fact how you adjust your approach as conditions change. I have to admit I rarely adjust my sensitivity or threshold but I may try to adjust more as needed going forward. Looks like your ATMAX is working well for you. Have you used the ATPRO or ATGOLD previously?
 
Ha! When I finally saw that garter snake poking through the leaves, my first thought was " Nel Snake Coil "......what a crazy thought? Nice finds by the way.:thumbup:

Thank you for your kind words. Most of the time my outings are no where near impressive :rofl:

Yes I previously used the AT - PRO for several years and briefly used the AT Gold before that. I don't show every hunt either. As I mention in the above post, the previous two hunts were a dud. 10 hours of finding nothing (well I did find plenty of iron nails and .22 casings but I am not sure others want to see them :)) Yes many would have moved on and forgot the place. Me, I do not have many spots left so the only thing for me to do is keep beating the same ones over and over. Truth be told, some hunts are truly depressing (like the last 10 hours in this place :cry:) However I have hope and that hope came through for me today :cheers:


In any case, I would suggest (when you locate an area that is heavily contaminated with iron) to lower your sensitivity. As many other hunters have mentioned running high sensitivity in heavy iron is like running your high beams in the fog. I agree with the analogy and have witnessed with my own ears and eyes the results of adjusting detector settings as conditions change. The Max I keep quite with no threshold as it calms the machine down for me. Today I kept it at 00 on the threshold as 99% of my hunt was pretty clean ground. When the ground is littered with iron junk I will even go into a deeper negative threshold. So far I have been keeping it between -1 and -3 in those type of situations. One more thing before I go off to dreamland, every now and then throughout your hunts, do a quick ground balance and make sure your machine is optimally GB to the soil. :goodnight:

Thanks for all your insight. I am a believer about ground balancing more. It just proves necessary sometimes and keeps you in a optimized condition. As far as adjusting sensitivity, I will be looking into that more as soon as I can get outside again. Hopefully later this week. I am giving serious thought of adding a NEL Sharpshooter to the mix. Any thoughts on that? Again thanks for all your insight!
 
Hi Russ,
I never have used the NEL Sharpshooter on the AT series so I can't provide any insight. I am sure it is a fine coil but at this point I personally see no need for it. Reason being is that I have discovered so many nice finds with the 5x8DD it rarely ever comes off. Someday, I just might take out my brand new 8.5x11"DD coil :rofl:

Thanks bhpa. This is my 3rd seated dime in my whole career. Very hard to find them as most places have been hammered hard. So I hammer back even harder in places that others have left for dead hoping to find something they missed. :detecting:
