As promised, this could be a button from a huntin' shirt a guy bought at Woolworth's 30 years ago..

or who knows. I found this yesterday in the lake and never really gave it much thought, as I find all sorts of copper snaps and little flat buttons all the time and just pitch them in the trash. So after seeing Tony's buttons, before I heaved this one I looked at it with my loupe, and low & behold it has some sort of chicken or vulture on the front with little horizontal lines.

I took photos tonite and tried to enhance them as much as possible, but there is a good deal of corrosion. There is a small hole in the breast of this bird. Now I was going to try and clean this a little with electrolysis, but since the metal is already thin, I didn't want to damage it more.

So any opinions?? Electrolysis yes/no? Does the back type tell anything about date of manufacture?

All opinions welcomed.

Hard to tell from the picture, but the shank style leads me to believe it is fairly modern. What are the dates on the other finds that came out with it? It's still worth a second look. It may not be U.S. I have found a couple that I am told could be Russian military

but men folk from the area were in the civil war.

But, your "Woolworth's" comment may not have been far off ;) This would fall into the "Civilian" category....probably from a sport coat so they are also called "blazer buttons". Your right, many have an eagle or anchor that fools folks into thinking they have a military button because the same motif's were copied on blazers. The US. army great seal buttons were heavily used on civilian jackets up till recently (& maybe still are)......As you mentioned, a good clue is the back. That's a more modern shank. In Civil War days they were more like Tony's & backmarked. Don't feel bad....I had a whole cupfull of similar eagle/anchor ones & thought I'd struck it rich until a Civil War dealer busted my bubble :D

Burnt vulture after electrolysis....yum.
