Artillery Shells with the Coinstrike?

Bob Szabo

New member
I have yet to find a shell with my Coinstrike but I have found them in the past with my 1266.

Can someone here tell me how the Cointstrike will react to a burried shell? I know the 1266 would give me a good signal. It would give a good signal even with a large fragment. Im not sure if the tone ID would be canceled out or if due to the size of the shell the Coinstrike would register a high number and give a good tone like the 1266 does.

I could do a burry test but I dont think burrying large iron would be a good test since a shell burried for a long time would also effect the ground around it.

I have never been able to use all metal mode with the coinstike. Maybe I need to experiment a bit and turn it way down but whenever Ive used it it doesnt stop beeping. Very annoying. I might as well dig everyting and sift:) Any tips on all metal would also be appreciated.

It depends. If the shells have a brass/lead/zinc fuse or lead sabot then it can set off the ID tone. If the frag is round or flat (like a piece of Parrott shell) then it can cause a "false coin" signal. Numbers would be like 34 and probably giving you some negaives.

There is an ID tone for iron too and that tone will always work.
The "coin" tone most often will not trigger.

OK, one other trick here. Many times large iron frags and shells will give you a small "false coin" signal when you are off center. If you get this "coin" signal (34) then pinpoint and see if it turns to an iron signal. If it does dig it.

I hate the All Metal sound on the CS but it was I use almost all the time. After a few months you'll forget you hate it.

This is the best way to "hear" a frag and tell it from say a piece of fence wire. The typical large frag or shell down to a foot or so will read as a wide signal (like 4"). A piece of iron that is solid like this will yield an unbroken, solid-full single sound. Other types of iron signals will sound gravelly, broken and repeating. So if the All Metal tone is less grating then you have a big frag.

Now there are some DISC tricks too. Imagine you are wanting to dig a whole shell in a field of wire, nails and trash. Set the machine on DISC. Turn the Threshold up to say -50 or higher and the Sens on like 1 or 2. Now notch out everything you can and ignore the Hi Tone coin signal that you can't notch out. Sweep overlapping and slowly.

When you hear an iron ID tone pinpoint and dig. It works.

Last thing I dug this way was a 10 lb "sad iron".
I've dug a hundred frags with the CS, it works.

John is our all metal specialist. I have been messing around with the AM mode a little more lately, but that audio just GRATES on me:surrender: That's the one negative I have on the C$. It's kind of like opera  But once you get used to it, it's not so bad. (The All Metal sound that is...not opera!) The newer models have an improved more "Mellow" tone.

Thanks John. Im going to print this out and try some of these next time Im out. I think there still may be some shells on this site. Its been hunted a lot bt they guys I was with last week were using 1266s and they both found fragments. I did find a nice confederate fuse with the CS.

Watcha mean by that...Did the fat lady sing for you?
