Arthritic Pains Showing Up? Tennis Elbow? Hunts Getting Shorter Due To Pain?

As we age, the wear and tear on our joints, tendons and muscles sometimes shows up as we age. I know, as I work with patients who have worn out their knees and hips to the point where they have to be replaced. On the orthopedic sub-acute unit I work on as a Registered Nurse, we as a team build up the patients endurance with hip and knee replacements using various stretches and exercises, so they can go back home and live a productive life again.

Tennis elbow, or epicondylitis the technical term, is an inflammation of the tendons of the elbow caused by overuse of the muscles of the forearm. It can get painful, and take weeks to correct itself. You may notice, that when the pain begins, your endurance decreases quickly, and you usually end up cancelling your hunt. If you are prone to this, switching to a straight rod on your Garrett metal detector, should prevent tennis elbow and allow you to still continue using your AT Series detector.

Anderson Detector Shafts is a company which designs and builds straight rods and other great accessories for metal detectors. It is a proud sponsor of Findmall, and well looking into to lesson the wear and tear on your body. Using a straight shaft can eliminate the flexion of your elbow, and allow your stronger shoulder muscles to carry most of the load of the metal detector, allowing the stronger upper muscles to move that coil back and forth. That means much longer hunts for you. Please check them out.

Pete from Anderson Detector Shafts was kind enough to send me his latest designed shaft for an AT Pro. He had asked me to try it out and give him some comments on it. When I received it a few weeks ago, I quickly assembled it and made plans to do a water hunt using the AT Pro on a straight rod the next morning. I headed out to a lake, and hunted for 4 hours straight. The rod is slightly lighter then the Garrett Factory rod and using my shoulder mostly to move the coil back and forth, instead of the "S" handle, I did hunt longer without a break and less fatigue. The next morning, my left shoulder was not sore ( I swing the detector with my left arm mostly, but can easily use my right arm also) however, my right arm was sore from scooping so many targets. I also hunted on Sunday for three hours at a school coin shooting.

So, overall, it was a nice positive change switching to a straight rod. Less fatigue on the elbow and more lasting power using the shoulder muscles. Having an adjustable angle for the box is a great option, as we are all built differently and being able to see the VDI numbers is an asset to most hunters. The lower rod fits very snug in the upper rod. There is currently absolutely no wobble in that lower rod.The lower rod is very well built and engineered. Shafts are available for Minelab, Tesoro, Fisher, Whites, JW Fisher And Garrett.

Its not just the shaft that causes that issue. A lot of people have a tendancy to swing really fast with a shorter shaft......... longer shafts slow you down to a more natural swing.... and believe it or not so can a heavier machine some times. With a stright shaft you also tend to swing the body more than just the machine. Straight shafts can better balance a machine as well. Anyone thats ever pulled their lower shaft out as far as it can go on dirt machine knows how nose heavy they can feel.

After my arm collapsed several years ago using a heavy detector, I did two things: I started hunting left handed until it healed, but more important I started visualizing the detector as a heavy weight and the only way I could swing it was to let my body sway and shoulders move my arms and detector. It was a gentle sway and almost imperceptible after practice and I still use it today. It requires a slightly different way of walking forward, but I consider it good exercise for my age. And it extended my hunts to near what I could do in my youth.

So if the manufacturers flat out know that S Shafts are very poor ergonomics why do they continue to release detectors using them? Or more important why do we as the end users allow them to do it? Class action may turn things around.

Goodmore, i think we are seeing more straight shaft machines now days. Take a look at the new ones. OVER USE....... like eating way to much of a good thing isnt healthy. Good example...... carpal tunnel since computers came out. Oddly...... ive not heard as much about it since the great cell phone crazzzzz

Lawyering up?
Good God, man. YOU are responsible for yourself. Not some company.
No one forces anyone to buy a metal detector. Do your research and take Personal Responsibility for your own actions. If you cant handle a 5# S stick, get a 2# straight stick, hit the weight room a bit more regularly, or better yet just find a less strenuous hobby.

And if by some twisted miracle you do win a lawsuit, exactly where do you think that the money to pay off the 'winners' is going to come from? Santa Claus? The Easter Bunny? Nope, its coming from the Customers of those companies you want to sue. Like, say all us metal detecting hobbyists.

Why they keep making Excals with the crappy shaft and several other poorly designed features is largely a matter of buyers putting up with it. I for one will not buy a new one until they make improvements.
I have 2 aftermarket shafts for my used Excals and the ugly blue sticks sit sulking on the bench. Kudos to those who build cottage industries upon manufacturer's laziness.

+1 on that. My S stick is shortly going to be chopped up and made into a belt/chest mount when I find the time.

I don't understand the S shafts, where you grip the bend, either. When I first got my TDI pro and it had that huge, vertical grip to use, I asked myself why isn't every detector like that. I didn't know what I was missing until I used it. I'm glad that I discovered it early. Being young, hopefully not using the bad shafts will save me in my later years.

Since you brought it up, I have a 18x5.5 T foot coil on my TDI and it swings like a feather!! It is not a feather! Its crazy amazing how good it swings.

Oh I almost forgot... I get arthritis pains in my hands from the scoop and sand lifting for four to six hours.

I now take 4 Arthritic Tylenol a day to help dampen the pain in my shoulder and lower back. I believe these aches and pains were brought on from metal detecting, HOW EVER I REFUSE TO NOT METAL DETECT! Greatest hobby anyone can find, meet nice people in your travels and nice people on web sites like this.
To all of us old guys, keep swinging (as in M Ding) don't let the minor pains ruin your sport.

Now got serious case of tennis elbow......the result of using a spade at the beach and digging one handed. Now got a good scoop so I should be okay.
