Are Eagle Headphones Crap?

New member
Kelly Co gives away free eagle headphones with many metal detectors. Supposedly they are retailed at $100. Has anyone used them? Are they any good or are they crap?

...and little more. Which is not abad thing. They've been standards for as long as I have been detecting.
Get em for $14.95 or less on ebay. That $100 price? Pure hype.

Yep I agree. You are better off getting a good set of high response headphones. I like to use Sony studio standards. Good response and excellent audio. And if they have a problem, they can be fixed easily. And then I can use them to listen to my stereo when relaxing after a long day of detecting.

Headphones do severla things....

1. Isolate outside noise from interfering with your efforts.
2. Isolate detector noise from the outside world.
3. Deliver audio to your ears so you know whats going on.
4. Conserve battery power.

The Calrad/Eagle/Royal/El Cheapo's do all of these things. They also have a stereo-mono, switch as some detectors - even today - still come with a mono audio output.
They are also unneccessarily heavy, bulky and hot. I prefer the in-ear digital style, or in a pinch, the head band studio types that Steve mentions. These give a much better audio resonse in terms of crispness, IMHO. And they are much easier to use and thus live with. But I use the Calrads, still, especially when it is cold outside.

I just had a pretty good set ($80.00 ones) of ear phones go bad and had to use a "free set" I had until I get the Gray Ghost's I ordered yesterday. Being used to using good "ears" I would probably seriously think about giving up the hobby (after 37 year's) if I had to continue using the "free set". There truly is that much difference and I still have quite good hearing. A quality set of headphones, those designed for metal detectors, can pay for themselves very quickly. JMHO. HH jim tn

Yap, Eagle headphones are good but nothing more. As for me I really like Koss R80. They are lightweight, comfortable with dependable quality.

You think those suckers are heavy. I have been using a set of Clark Davidson's for two years.

Nothing like Koss TD/81 . I have been using these seems like forever. I got another set giving too me as my friend told me that he was not able to get them to work. I sent them back to Koss, and with the Lifetime warranty all I had to pay was shipping them back. They did the rest. Now I have a back up set of Good head phones.
If you don't have a good set of headphones you just don't Know " WHAT YOU ARE MISSING".

Are the Audio 200 same as cheapos or eagle headphones?
Thnx

Own two sets of Calrads one to use and one for the trunk...The one I use is in its 9th year of heavy hunting...sure a little worn but work well.
Been thru that 100 dollar phone deals and one broke the first time out the replacement lasted a week or so and they charged me a fee to have replaced.
Different strokes for different folks so be my guest....

I always tell my customers the next biggest investment after buying a detector should be the best quality headphones you can afford. You'll never know what you are missing if you can't hear it!

I've used and abused a set of Calrad 15-135B headphones I purchased back in 1995 and they're still going strong. There still available on ePay for $20.00 plus shipping.

They work equally well for me on both my Tesoro Toltec II and Fisher F-5. Just thought I'd mention it. :wiggle:

I've used many different phones and all the cheaper ones have sounded hollow and tinny to my ear. The Gray Ghosts I currently use are very crisp and clear comparatively. and seal out exterior noise quite well. However, in hot weather they are a bit warm.

In this case, you get what you paid for.
