Are any of you out there running the Gray Ghost Underwater headphones on Excal?...........

G'day GH....

I changed my stock blue Excal phones over to the Grayghost phones mainly because the Excal phones were constantly being washed off my head from waves and when dropping underwater to fan for targets. I think the audio on the GG phones gives a smoother audio and better insulation from the wind and waves but I don't think it's a big difference in this area. The GG phones fit much firmer around the head and stay put after being hit from waves and when you dive down. The Excal ear cups are too big and as you probably know, when you go underwater they are too buoyant until the cups fill with water....the GG phones are smaller in this area and ducking under the water isn't a problem. IMHO, comfort and fit are much better on the GG and audio is probably slightly more "satisfying". I'd be lying to say that the GG audio allows for better target ID, etc. I bought them almost solely so they wouldn't wash off from waves and going under quickly. I had Minelab Australia hardwire and resin set a matching end connector that simply slides into the Excal main body.....very simple to remove and replace.
My old Excal headphones are now on my waterproofed Goldquest SS which I know only use when there is black sands present....generally my local beaches down here are postcard white and free of minerals.
My #1 machine is the Aquasound with the Excal as back up.
I actually went to the beach today for some winter wet sand detecting and was using the Goldquest SS and I found the Excal phones to have a perfectly adequate audio.
Just to confuse things even more......the headphones on the Aquasound are Viking V1...these are superior to the phones I just mentioned.....great audio....very comfortable...stay put.....feel really well made. I don't know their origins...you'd need to contact Mr.Gold on the "other" detecting site to maybe get some more info.

Hope some of this info is of use to you,
Have a good summer...plenty of gold,
Regards,
Tony..Perth, Aust.

PS....Here's a photo of my 3 top mates....the wife knows she is 4th:ausflag::argue:

I bought a set that already had the Excal control tube end cap on. I just had to replace the end cap.

I like them better, only because my 'blue' set were cheaply made, and sometime would fall off my head, and one cup would be backwards.

A benefit to me, was the tones had changed to a little higher pitch.

Also, the machine can be packed even smaller now.

The Viking headphones that Tony is talking about remind me of Bilson headphones. They look the same.

Ed,

You are absolutely correct !!!

I have only just noticed but under the top band (you can see clearly in the picture from the previous post), I can make out the first of 2 letters..."B" and "I"...too tight to see any further..."Bilsom" it must be. I use this brand when I'm using power tools for hearing protection.

They are nice headphones....my favourites so far.

Regards,
Tony.

GH,

They are actually an industrial line of hearing protection ear muffs from Bilsom....very sturdy and comfortable. Obviously, the electronics are then added to them by Mr.Gold.

I have no idea what sort of electronics/speakers are inside them though.....I would guess high grade in keeping with the rest of the Aquasound that Mr.Gold builds....he hand selects the components himself. The earmuffs themselves go for about $10 !!

Tony.

Has anyone looked into getting a set of detector pro underwater headphones/pinpointer put on the excal.
