Aqua-Explorer - ready to get dunked in the ocean

Charles (Upstate NY)

Well-known member
I will be swinging this on the NH/MA beaches Thursday! Here's the battery box before I buttoned it up. The headphone wires pass through and out a waterproof fitting on the back. This way I can remove the headphones if I want by simply unscrewing the connector.

Well here it is. You can see the silicone front cover is not quite optically clear but its pretty good, might even function as a sun screen to keep the glare off. The sheet is flexible of course and .060 inch thick. It exceeded my expectations by quite a margin in that the buttons are as easy to press through this cover as they are with no cover at all.

Here's the back with the clear lexan rear cover and the two waterproof fittings for the coil, and battery/heaphones.

Here's a closup of the front.

hmmmm....What do you have on for a coil? Is there any chance of meeting Charles in Hampton NH or Salisbury MA.? I would like to meet you, just cause I think you could bless my explorer xs and I would have better luck, all kidding aside I would like to meet Charles from Upstae NY. I think my 10 1/2 stock coil has a leak....cause it would be nice to have a bigger coil to do such large beaches as both mentioned above. My 7.5 is so tiny it takes awhile to get it done. If you have any prototype larger coils for the expl. xs I would be glad to buy one off you if you can bring one with you. I work but get off at 2pm and its only a hour or so from me. Hope I catch you before you leave...if not Good Luck Charles and don't forget to post!!!

Incredible! Holy cow. Charles, you ARE the man. It's so beautiful it doesn't even matter if it works! But it sure looks like it's going to work. Awesome!

Hmmm...me in robes with my cross and holy water blessing metal detectors on the beach? lol I think that would draw too many onlookers.

All my stock coils are leak-o-matics at the beach and false like crazy if I get them wet. A while back Bob down near Long Island, NY asked me to design a shell for a beach coil and he built one of these coils for his Sovereign. He was reporting much improved depth and sensitivity to small gold so I decided to build one for my Explorer. It sure covers more ground per swing, enough that I can take a normal stride now.

You beach hunters tell me its all about how much ground you can cove during low tide and in testing this coil down on the Atlantic City beaches it was an improvement over the stock coil in that respect. Judging from the small targets I dug it was also pretty sensitive. I'll have to take a pic of the finds and post them.

I'll be hunting low tides (2 hours before/after) at Salisbury Thursday, again Friday if I do well or I might hit Hampton if finds are not plentiful at Salisbury. I'm going to hunt the first low tide on Saturday also. Send me an email and I'll send you my cell phone number if you want to connect up with me.

Charles, with people like you out there doing what you do, I sometimes wonder why companies like Minelad can not come up with better designs. It looks great and if it works half as well as it looks, I would hate to follow you on the beach.

Thanks for sharing.

Thats too bad...cause next week is gonna be a higher low tide...Here is a link for the month of July...it looks nice near the end of the month with -minus tides...just in case you have the option of when you can come over.Just an idea to think about. Beachhunter from mass. is right about punks there...be carefull. :starwars:
