April Meeting Pics #3

Jeff, Once again thanks for the great pics. Who found the Civil War buckle?

Hi Robbie, The Civil War buckle is mine. I dug it in a park district park in Henry County. I have no clue what it was doing there. The land was willed to the city around 1917. The owner of that land was born in 1855 in Aurora.. So the buckle most likely was lost by someone else. The buckle was a good 10" deep, but gave a strong solid tone on my T-2. That park has produced several large cents, at least one 2 cent coin and Seated coins as well. I have pulled around 20 Barber coins from it and oddly enough it has produced as many Barber dimes for me as it has Rosies and Mercs combined. On average about one in four coins found there have considerable age. I have 1914 and 1920 Wheats from there this spring. In my confusion over the find, I am pretty sure that I didn't double check the hole. I best be getting back there.

Dave congrats on your Civil War buckle. I bet you about flipped when you pulled it out of the ground. It sounds like you have discovered a true honey hole. It's great to see that you are pulling out a variety of coins out that place. Good luck on your next hunt.

Possibly there was a G.A.R. reunion held there, and someone wore their old uniform and lost it. We'll probably never know, but the possibilities are endless.
