Apple Stand Finds

Hit the Old Apple Stand again this evening. Started listening for low tones this time due to not finding much silver here after several hunts. Here are my nickels, 2 Indians and 1 1943 Steel Penny (my first).

I thought that the steel penny would be rusted, Instead it had a thick black coating on it that came off with my fingernail.

Neat finds, that old Stand has been good to you...

Bruce,

Congratulations! That is the very FIRST steel penny that I have seen recovereed from the ground with a metal detector that wasn't corroded beyond recognition. ( I have been doing this for a few decades) I am notably impressed.

That is awesome! And deserves a BIG THUMBS UP.

And a nice bunch of nickels to boot.

Yes, I was very surprised to see it was steel when I scraped the black coating off. I wonder what it was that it protected it from rusting. quote="Rich (Utah)"]

Sorry for double post. Did not know that I could not delete first post.

Steel cent, very cool! Have never dug one myself, although my wife brought home a solid roll of them from her work last year.
Composition is zinc-coated steel, not sure if zinc would be a preservative, doubt it.

Hunted for about 20 minutes and found one keeper. 1905 Indian Head Penny. Think I will hit it again tomorrow when the wind dies down some. Brrrrrr!!! LOL
