Apothecary Bowel

Marc in Bavaria

New member
No coins today but I did find an apothecary bowl, it gave a good stable reading of 11-45 and was about 8" deep. Apothecary bowels were used for measuring medicine in the old days. There were several sizes in a set and they fit inside each other for storing so they are sometimes referred to as nesting weights. I have to clean this one up to see if it is hallmarked. This is the fourth one I have found in Germany.

Thanks for looking.

HH,
Marc

Hi Ron, yes, I'm going to try to clean it up. What I thought was only dirt inside turns out to be lead so I am going to have to find a way to smelt it out. I guess someone might have been using it to form musket balls because I found some of those nearby and can't really think of another reason why someone would fill it up with lead.

Marc
