Anything gained by hunting without coil cover?

New member
I have tried my excal II with and without the coil cover. Is there any loss of signal with the cover in place?

You May have to Fuel up the Lear on this one and have a private meeting with The Professor & VB Max on this subject, they are the Pro's on this subject.....Joe

if you get sand between the coil and cover you might loose some.but in 40 years of hunting iv not had this problem.i never take my coil covers off.back in the old days there were no coil covers and you could nick a coil pretty easy on a rock/coral/shell bed.some say black sand between the coil and cover can make your detector erratic but iv never had this problem eather.some people dont run a coil cover and just coat the coil with Marine Epoxy or Rino truck bed liner.myself, from the day i buy a new detector i never take them off and never had a problem.

Sand and dirt will build up under the cover. If it is sand from the beach or slightly minerialized dirt it will make the detector false.

If I intend on keeping a coil and not selling it I prefer to leave a coil cover off and enjoy the extra lightness. = less fatigue, more hunting. That extra few ounces make a big differences at the end of a stem!!.
I've enjoyed doing this for a number of year's on a tesoro cleansweep and concentric 8" and their still going strong, in fact I might paint some epoxy on the cleansweep's corners where the scrubbing occurs.

I do think there is more to gain by living the cover on. I do use the coil to level out the sand sometimes. When the sand is uneven in the bottom, with the coil, you can get an extra 2 to 3 inches by scraping the bottom witch is just enough to make the difference between uncertain signal and a sure one. I do not want to use an unprotected coil as a scraper.

1/16 " epoxy is probably heavier than the plastic cover.

By the way, about the weight of the detector: I find to much inconvenient by using the strait shaft and the cross chest mount, so i went back with the original S shaft witch is more performance.
But , yes the excal, is very heavy with the S shaft out of water. I use the help of a bungee to remove 60% of the weight.

there is one spot where i hunt i still use the cover over the epoxy coating.................many big rocks, blocks and stones

i use the cover no where else.

Could you seal around the edge of the cover to keep sand and water out using silicone sealant? That way it would be easy to replace a damaged cover in the future.

Yes you can use sealant around coil cover for land use,but it would be buoyant in water.I must have over 2 dozen new covers saved in a crate,I prefer to coat all my coils these past 30+ years. sam in ms

Hi Grave, I do like that Epoxy job. i will try it on my MXT first....
