Anything but iron

Bunk

New member
I am new at hunting coins and have been trying to hunt an old town site that is REAL trashy all kinds of iron bits from little pieces of old cans to railroad spikes.
What would be the best way to set up my X-70 to avoid all the iron?
I did find a 1918 penny a few weeks ago and a 1911 penny today. Thanks for any help!

Although the 6-inch DD operates at 18.75 kHz, I still believe it is our best coil for trashy iron infested sites. Strictly due to the size and DD design. This past fall my brother and I hunted an area that sounds just like yours. An old town, abandoned in the late 1800's, with a railroad running right down between the two rows of houses. The 19 houses were burned around 1920, the rail road rails were removed shortly after and the railroad hardware and all the nails from those houses were left behind. This site is NASTY. So far, we've only found two IH cents and a few trinkets. I know there is more out there. But this is one tough hunt. What little success I've had is by running a slower than normal sweep speed, all metal mode, multiple tones (ignoring the low tone of iron), lock the GB a couple points positive, reduce the sensitivity by a few settings and give it a try. If the low iron tones drive you nuts, set up a pattern with all the negative numbers, and +48 rejected. If the chatter drives you nuts, turn down the sensitivity a bit more and try holding your coil an inch or so higher. Most importantly, be willing to try new settings and have more patience than I sometimes have. :rage: JMHO HH Randy

Thanks Randy! I am willing to try anything. So far I have found 2 wheat cents, 1918 in good shape and a 1911 in poor shape. Today I did find 2 what I think are 41. rimfire cases. Real hot here in AZ now so not a lot of time to hunt.
