Found this today detecting at the beach, and I have no idea what this is.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Jason

Dose the bottom have a hole? any threads?
looks like it is two sided and has a spring in it. does it have a clip function?
A picture of the bottom and the other side might help.

Looks like maybe a fancy Sword hilt. Grubstake

+1...looks like part of a cheap gaudy chinese made sword or knife

HuntinDog, Yes the bottom does have a hole, but not threaded. Looks like it still fit over a wooden or metal pole, nothing to attach it securely though. Both sides of the object are the same. Not sure what you mean by a spring in it or clip function. The top part seems like it clamped down on something round, maybe a rope, looking at the indentions in the inside edge of the top pieces. If that makes sense. Lol

jbr13,
In the first and second picture looking down it looked like there may have been a spring, but I think what I'm seeing is detail through the curve of the snake.
I flipped your last picture to see what it looked like, thinking the snake head would face up. (so it looks like it put the flipped picture down at the bottom of my post??)
It does have the look of a sword handle.
But I think if a piece of wood or molded plastic were to have been in the grove for a handle it would have been to big for a hand to grip.(looks about 1 1/2")
Thinking that it would have been for a child.
Now if the handle were attached to the round hole end and a flat 1 1/2' blade were coming out of the slotted snake end that would be a better fit a childs hand.

So after all of that and not have any other ideas of what it maybe...
I'm going with sword handle...

Cool find..

for a child or not, i dont think that would be a comfortable fit in hand, wonder if it was at the top of something like a flag pole or something. CO

Lamp finial?

I think you guys are right, its probably a fancy ornamental sword piece.

The what looks like a split top could really be a channel to secure the blade which would protrode out from the snake end. The hole at the other end could be for attaching the handle.

Sword hilt.the blade slides through it.

I saw a off the house flag pole with something very close to your find on the end of the flag rod..

Yet it looks to like one of the Chinese knife handles on less expensive knives sold at flea markets...
