Anyone using a Sunray Inline probe on their Quattro's? if so...........

I have been using the Sunray Probe on my Quattro here in Australia for about 6 months and it's great.

Yes it makes the unit heavier and you notice it at first but after awhile you get used to it. If I am going to hunt for a long time I use a harness with bungee cord to take most of the weight.

All my detecting has been on the beach in damp or wet dirty sandy grit and this has been where the probe has proved to be most useful, most of the coins have been lost for some time and have taken on the appearance of their surroundings and are difficult to spot but the probe finds them quick time.

Also if I have a hole with a little water in the bottom I often use the probe to Pinpoint the target the scoop my hand under the probe and most times find I have the target in my hand.

Hope this helps, I find it most helpful.

LOVE IT!!! its well worth investing in, as for the weight i dont really notice it so much. I think the probe mounted up high on the battery box counteracts against the heavy nose weight of the DD coil.

good luck huntin, Dave

Hi Mike,
I hit a very trashy site today and switched from the stock 1050 to the Sunray X5 coil. But this place was so trashy that even for the 5 inch coil the numbers were jumping from 32-34, 17-19 & -2 on the ID meter.
Used the Sunray probe to find these targets - mostly bullets. I can tell you that even with the X1 probe, the sounds were more iffy than solid and this was like no more than 1-3 inches on the surface but I would think it is more the mineralized & density of metal fragments at this site. For sure, would have been difficult to detect these grounds without a probe. I will post some pics later.
Btw, if you don't have the X1 probe now, unless you can install one yourself, you may need to buy it with an extra shaft as the probe switch box needs to be secured on the upper blue shaft. I have two as I usually don't use the probe on saltwater beach trips.

for mounting, or you would have to buy an extra rod. I guess this is due to the coil being fed through the rod rather then wrapped around the exterior like most other detectors?

You can no longer insert the coil cable into the shaft as the cable attaches to the probe box which is mounted either on top or bottom of middle shaft.

You either have to send the upper shaft to Sun Ray to have the probe mounted on the shaft, or just buy the extra shaft right from Sun Ray with the X1 probe right on it, this way you will always have the original upper shaft if you ever need it.
The reason you have to send it in for Sun Ray to mount it is they do not sell the probe you mount on the shaft yourself as the cable has to be run into the shaft from the switching box to the control box, so a hole has to be drilled and the switching box mounted on the shaft.
