Anyone using a Sovereign without a meter??

Lightstryder

New member
So I just bought a Sov GT, isn't here yet, but going to be here this weekend. It's been recommended that I get the meter for it, but they don't make it anymore and it's darned rare to come by it seems. So what I want to know is anyone using a Sovereign without the meter and just going on sound? Do you feel that you should have got the meter or are you perfectly happy with the sound by itself? Personally I am thinking since I don't have it anyway, I might as well just learn the sounds and if I can find a meter in the near future then maybe I will upgrade then.

I bought a Sovereign about a year ago and also bought the meter for it at the same time.
I was told it was a big help in the learning curve of the Sovereign and can see the advantage of having it.
It really helps on deep targets and targets next to iron as far as my limited experience has shown me.
I don't know if I would have faired as well without starting out with the meter, but I am glad I got one now that they are discontinued.

i use gt without meter.... often thought of buying one but never got around to it....i think it probably would help with the learning curve... in my opinion you really wouldnt need it at the beach or open fields.... it works great around small iron and nulls when you sweep over iron....but i dont like using it in the parks due to all the can slaw.... some of the small gold ive found over the last year gave of horrible signals ... i dont know what they would have looked like on a meter but ide be willing to bet they would have read out as trash..... take the time to learn the machine .. youll loveit.. i do...

Lightstryder, the Sovereign is a lot different than other metal detectors. Most users including myself didn't like or appreciate this detector until learned with some time in the field.Use only the Sovereign for a couple of weeks before you make any conclusions.I saw a Sunray 180 meter for 160.00.The meter will help you understand how the Sovereign performs and make hunting a lot more pleasant.I have used the Garrett GTI 2500 the Sovereign will require a different approach.Stick with the Sovereign and learn its one of the best detectors for park hunting in my opinion.I might be able to help with a 180 meter.Good Luck Ron.

The Sovereign with a meter can go through thrash parks better than any detector I've used. Can slaw usually not even a hick-up.The 550 meter works better for the very tough screw tabs.

That's how I feel. I dig way less trash with a Sovereign than any machine I ever owned. The key is the audio...smooth, warm, round sounding is a good target.

You don't need a meter as the Sovereign speaks in full sentences more than any machine on the market, but a meter adds more info. Put a WTB add in the detector acc. forum on findmall and you'll find one. Most prefer a 180 meter. You could also build a meter for like $4. Very easy.

Anyone using an Excal is essentially using a waterproof Sovereign GT without a meter. And there are plenty of users who really like the Excalibur, myself included. That being said if I did have a Sovereign I would want to have the meter so that I had the option of using it.

Drop me an Email if you can't find a meter I bought a couple extra because I heard they quit making them

I too am looking for a good used meter, I could have bought a new one but moneys tight and their expensive for such a simple piece of equipment. I do agree that its best to get used to the sovereign without the meter so you know the tones, then add the meter. Thats why I dont mind waiting for a good used one, because you do have the advantage of Tone-ID..... that said anyone who wants to sell their meter drop me a line!
