WHAT KIND OF RESULTS DID YOU GET:was not sure what depth the dx-1 is good for?thinking about buying one.is it better than the det.pro pistol probe which gets 5 1/2-------6" in depth?need some feedback please.-------------------------------------:pulltab:bill

I wouldn't part with my DX-1. There's many pros to this pinpointer such as you never have to worry about loosing it. You use the batteries from your detector. It's like having a one inch coil at your fingertips. You can do a search on the forum and there's been many posts about the DX-1. HH, Nancy

There are several things I don't like about the Detector Pro, as good as it is. One, it looks too much like it's name, pistol probe. We hunt a lot of schools and public property. The last thing I want to wear is something that looks like a pistol. Two, is that the Pistol probe is an all metal detector and it detects all metal in the ground. Many of our targets are in and around iron. Three, I have read many reports that the pistol probe interferes with many makes of detectors and one has to move there detector "out of range", usually a couple of feet in some cases. Here is more info that I posted on the SunRay forum in an answer to the Garrett pinpointer:

True, the Garrett is a dandy for a handheld, but for $30 more, discount or retail, you not only get audio target ID through your headphones, but visual target ID depending on your machine. On your MXT Larry, that would be Relic mode, trigger forward. Your depth is considerably more, I get 4-5 inches with mine and you can not forget and leave your SunRay laying in the leaves either. You also get a very accurate depth reading and directional probing so you know exactly where your target is in the ground. What I like most is the SunRay has discrimination so you are not just pinpointing any piece of metal in the ground. I find my target in the hole with discrimination and then squeeze the trigger for all metal dead-on depth, target ID and placement.

All of that for $30 more.........is it worth it?............You bet!

Just ordered mine. I'll tell you next week!!!

But I can tell you now that I'm pretty tired of the handheld. Mine seems to really like wet grass roots and, perhaps due to overuse, the button seems to have to be pressed in with 200 lbs of force. I probably dropped it and something isn't quite right. Hopefully the DX will help...my 2 cents.

S/F,

I use the Detector Pro Uniprobe headset and have the Sunray inline probe. I do have the pistol probe but it does not see much action. For DetectorPro I would go with the Uniprobe headset rather than the pistol probe. As for the Sunray the major advantage is being able to read the VDI on the screen. Depth wise Detector Pro is the top dog hands down Sunray 3" max.

Because the Sunray is machine matched and I use many different units for me it only makes sense to go with a probe that can be used on a number of machines.
I've not had any issue with the Detector Probe causing interference with the MXT but have on a Baron SST or Cobra 11 don't remember off the top which one it was.

I have also used the Sunray on an Explore 11 and it was fine it is nice to read the target on the screen good product no question, I'd rather have a Uniprobe headset nothing like a good set of headphones with a built in probe that can't be matched for depth.

I have the Sunray on my MXT and I LOVE it. Really works well. I played with a pistol probe belonging to a friend and couldn't hear it wearing my headphones and the led was hard to see in the bright sun. One thing I won't do with out on a separate handheld pinpointer is a vibration mode and I don't think the pistol probe has that. My two bits.

I too have the DX-1 and would not have anything else. The sensitivity is adjustable by the gain on the MXT. It is like having a 2nd detector......jim

A couple of more thoughts for you.

The fact that the Sunray reads the target through the machine is a nice feature but the machine and I have already decided to take the target so it's depth that I want.

The other thing that folks may not consider is if the pinpointer fails on the Sunray in the field your machine is out of action, not so with the Uniprobe.

You will get more depth with the probe by turning up your gain on the MXT......not a problem. I my machine fails, I will not be digging targets.

I guess I don't understand the pinpointer failure and how that would affect the whole machine. Even if it was the switch, just by-pass the switch and screw your coil into the detector instead of the SunRay switch box.

I had the DX-1 and the pistol probe as well. I really didnt like either of them. I have the Garrett Pro pinpointer now and absolutely love it!! Its my favorite by far. It really varies from person to person though and what your actually wanting out of the pinpointer. You may have to just try one out and if you dont like the performance sell it on the classifieds page here for a little less than what you paid for it. Thats what I did!

Was thinking back on my Explore Larry had the replacement middle rod. Not easy to bypass. Dan

What Larry is saying is, "If you have a problem with the switch on the DX-1, you can unplug the cord from the coil going into the DX-1 box and plug it directly into the MXT input after you remove the plug from the output of the DX-1 going into the MXT". Very easy to bypass or just remove the DX-1 from the MXT. I had a handheld probe and did not like it at all. Sometimes I left it near the hole and it did not have the distance range of the DX-1. There are two things that I do not like about the DX-1. One is the extra weight on the shaft and the other is that it is useless for finding small nuggets in the gold prospecting mode. I usually use a homemade swingy thingy that I made out of suspenders for the weight and do not use a probe when nugget shooting. I have found a 1/2 grain (not gram) picker 3 inches down with the MXT.

Now I understand.........Minelab is a whole different can of worms.

It's a great extra for your mxt and my wife and I are happy we bought one. For me the best part is the way the thing feels in my hand, I just grab it any old way with no button or certain orientation when I'm holding it. Works great, easy to poke around in the hole, doesn't get left on the ground = Good

BTW were new to this forum... Hi everyone.
