Anyone used a Monopod before?

I have been thinking about buying a tripod for a while, but because I like getting out and hiking I am thinking a mono pod might be better suited for my uses. A mono pod, if you don't know, is basically a pole that holds a camera, hence the name mono pod. Many mono pods are also hiking poles, which is why I am thinking it would be better than a tripod for hiking, being that a tripod would be awkward to carry on my hydration pack.

Just thought I would share my thoughts. HH and GL

The monopod that I use is a very simple one and would be good for hiking or for use where a tripod is prohibited. below are three links to get you started in how to use a monopod. Kelley (Texas) :)

I bought a monopod from walmart (online) for about 10 dollars...never used it and then i figure out that i would like one with a "swivel" top

This was my first purchase and i returned it because of its non adjustable top....was only 9.99 shipped to the store
1 Targus Red TG-MP6710 67" Camera/Camcorder Monopod

this is the monopod i recently ordered from walmart so that it has that swivel top....i paid 20.14 shipped to the store..i noticed now that its 22.13 plus tax shipped to the store ...

of course both had sales tax tagged on.

havent used it yet butim sure it will do the job for me

Well, the monopod also has to be a hiking pole. That way it pulls double duty and is light. Still looking into some on Amazon and other sites. Thanks and HH

as a hiking pole too, you might want to consider a one piece monopod if there is such a thing. Most monopods have several hollow sections that retract within each section, and when extended, are held in place by a folding latch. I would wonder how strong the latch would be in preventing it from collapsing on you when applying weight to it as you would a walking stick. Kelley (Texas) :)

Buy a monopod with retractable legs. I can unscrew a cap at the bottom of my monopod and three legs come out so I can still use it as a tripod. When I'm finished I just push the legs back in the bottom and screw the cap back in the bottom and it's a monopod. It will be a little more expensive but you will have more options. Don't buy a cheap one, I have a Bogen.
