Anyone use a Gold Bug Pro at the beach?

I will soon be holidaying at an area with saltwater beaches...have used the Gold Bug Pro there before and am happy with it....Does anyone have any experience with the 10" DD coil, and how it performs as compared with the 11"DD on a beach (saltwater). Weight is about the same....are there any differences, advantages/disadvantages, one over the other. Thanks for any input. It will be greatly appreciated. HH

I have the GB amateur (not Pro) and have used the 10 the last couple weeks at the beach- wet & dry sand. It has been great. If I had it first I don't think I would have bought my PI and I am considering selling my 5 & 11 DDs. I have not been happier with any MDing purchase.

On a side note, I have not had any issues Ground Balancing down to 3 or 4 in wet sand and usually 20s to 60s in dry depending how close to the water. Ideal performance in the sand though I cannot say how deep/shallow it reaches. The PI hits deeper (as one would expect) but not all that often.

Thanks Tom, That's exactly the type of feedback I'm seeking....that's interesting that you're impressed with it in wet sand, to the extent that you even mention it in the same breath (sentence) with a PI. I have used mine mainly in dry sand, and did not try to re-balance when I moved to wet...Thanks again.

Re-balance is a must. Very big variance at my beach. I GB 3 or 4 times from very dry to very wet sand. Reading back over I may have misled by failing to mention I haven't found much in the wet with either MD. I attribute that to lack of shallow targets, but it does not support the GB proficiency in wet sand. Sorry to have been a bit careless there.

That's ok Tom...I gathered from what you said that the depth in wet is not as good as in dry sand, and that is my experience too. I dont expect PI performace from a VLF in wet sand, but I've found some deep targets in the dry with the Gold Bug, using all metal. Thanks again

That tracks with my experience. I am obviously a big fan of the new coil and outside of hydrophobia- fear of the water, prefer it to the PI. I pulled the plug on a beach hunt yesterday. I started out with the GBug and could feel the moisture in the air and turned around to get the PI, but decided it was too chilly for the clothes I had and went inland to hunt. It was raining full on before I had gone a block. Had a great time hunting the parking median at the local Mini Golf/Arcade (asked manager's OK). In less than an hour in the back 1/4 of the lot I had 14 tokens and a dollar's worth of clad. Not bad. I cherry picked shallow targets with high VDI and had a blast! Much better than freezing on the beach. Better weather predicted for the weekend.

Sounds like a great hunt, and a good decision to leave the beach (for another day). I am understanding a bit more why you like the 10" coil..versatility is one reason from the sound of your last post. That's good hunting (and gathering) in anyone's book.HH

As expected its sunny and nice today. The wife comes back from a 2 week trip tomorrow and I have to crank out some Honey do if I want to avoid hearing Honey don't!
Maybe it'll still be nice on Monday...
Tom who'd rather swing than do yard work (go figure!)
