do you use the number read out and is there a list of number chart for it on the web ? do you use stock coil for woods hunting ? and how many of you still love the unit ?

I'm still learning it my self . hunt the woods with it and the beach ........Alfonso

I still use the XS with stock coil size..Been converted to the EXP II coil and shaft though.

PS: I use the digital read out..works better for me.

i have one with sunray probe. i think the used xs's are the best value on market. there was the problem of weak housing unit cracking in earlier models. if the letters sep briefly appear when machine is fired up (comes up right after minelab logo) then machine is later model made after minelab addressed that issue. i've hunted with guys swinging the ex 2 and don't see any reason to upgrade. to get a numerical readout get andy sabisch's book mastering the explorer xs and s,in it he gives numerical readout for lots of targets, but personally i hunt in advanced smartfind or iron mask (at the beach) and rarely use the digital readout....good luck and hh....jb

Still using my light weight XS on a Whites shaft set up, use iron mask at -16 most of the time and listen for the good tones. There are great deals on used ones.

I use the Digital Readout over the Smartfind. I started out this way but every now and then, I will go check out the Smartfind Screen to see where the Icon is landing, which can tell me if it is a Penny, Nickel, Dime, Quarter, Half, or Silver Dollar. I am sure someone here will or may have already gave you a sight for the Readouts for Digital. I use the Stock Coil (10.5") most of the time but will switch over to the Joey 5x10 Coiltek Coil when hunting in Very Trashy Sites. My Explorer XS found me 323 Silver this year with Tons more since 2001. So, my XS is one machine that is here to stay until it dies and cannot be fixed. Even if this happened, I still would hang it on the wall in rememberance of all the great finds this detector has found me. That's how much I LOVE my XS! Good Luck and HH JerseyDevil!:detecting:

I have hunted maybe 40/60 8 inch coil vs stock coil. I hunt in Iron Mask only, ferrous tones and never use digital readout , Smartscreen is the way to go if hunting relics and old 1700 and 1800 sites. Too many variations of good readings of relics and the various colonial coins to worry about a certain digital number, so if doing that type of hunting, use Smart Screen and Ferrous tones, you will learn quickly good targets from bad. Hunting by tone first, and target ID second is sound advice.

My list of finds both coins and relics has been outstanding with the Explorer XS.................

Absolutely! I use the XS at the beach and in and around old foundations, parks, playgrounds, anywhere. I use the stock coil most of the time. I have a 5 inch coil that, while great in heavily trashed areas, takes a lot of time to cover ground. I just try and keep it simple. James has been a big help with suggestions and shortcuts since I have started 3 years ago. Like James, I will keep the XS until it falls apart. HH, Rich

I just got my XS in August, and I have found more silver and older coins in heavily hunted areas,in 4 months than I have found in 5 or 6 years of detecting in my local area.It is my main machine, and I enjoy using it,Has a bit of a learning curve, but it isnt that hard to get used to.I also use digital, because that is how I started out. Will check the smart screen from time to time
just to get used to using it.Also get the book by Andy Sabisch.it is very good. And will help you understand the machine.I got mine on Ebay signed.Great read...good luck stan

i got my xs in june '07 and have found 140 silver coins and 780 wheats! i love it. i hunt mostly parks. i hunt conductive mode, IM -6, smartfind screen, manual sensitivity.

Merry Christmas!

I bought one a few months back. I haven't got out with it much yet, but hope to do that in the new year. I like what I see so far and took it to the beach a couple of months back with good results (about $40 over 2 hunts). Loved the back light when night hunting on the beach. Unfortunately, I've got an earlier XS, and it has the shaft permanently glued shaft in. I've been trying to debond the glue, but no luck yet.
I've got Andy Sabishes book on Mastering the Explorer S and XS, but would not recommend it, as there is very little useful information in it. You will do far better reading this forum and asking questions.

I used the XS for years, I have the EXP II now. They both work basically the same. I used the numbers all the time.I found it to be very accurate on finds and both of these machines go very deep. Indian Head Cents hit at number, 25 on the XS. Silver dimes hit 28 also half dollar coins.Silver Dollars hit at 25. Clad Cents hit, 28, Zinc cents hit 25. Clad Dimes 28 as well as clad quarters. Nickels would hit 05, 06, & 07, depending on the style of nickel. I found that if you had a 25 at 6 inches or deeper it would be a Indian Head Cent or an early Lincoln Wheat Cent, Teens. The Zinc cents would hit 25 but would be only 3 inches or less. It does take a little time to learn the different numbers, but once you do, you will be amazed at what you will pull from the ground. I hope this helps. HH...Jesse.
