Anyone out there have an Automax Precision V4 Pinpointer ? Advice

Thanks guys.
I have a chance to order a V4 automax pinpointer for 40.00 bucks. Is this a good item ? Any complaints ? Any good reviews ?
For the price I thought I could take a shot on it...but if it breaks in a week, I dont want to. I try to get out to hunt once a week so Im thinking this should do the job.
Thanks !

Spend the extra money and get a well built pin pointer that will last.

funds are a little tight....Ive read good and bad things about the V4 Automax pinpointer.....for 40 bucks is this worth it ? Anyone else out there have a V4 Automax pinpointer ? What do you think ?

Dude - Don't fall for that trap! They used to give them away. Then they charged $14.95 So now you say it's $40 My suggestion was when they were free or even $14.95 was to get it and sell it new in the box. You could get between 40 and 55 for them. Then take that money and put it toward a Propointer. At 40 you will loose money. If you are buying a detector package with a bunch of free stuff made in China then look for another dealer. They will most likely sell you a machine plus a Propointer at a super deal. PM me if you want.

The Auto Max works but only good to about 1 inch. The pointer on mine broke off from the body but it did keep working as long as the wires were connected
My biggest complaint is that it is big and clunky, so you can't put it in your pocket and need the right size pouch to hold it in otherwise it will just fall out.
Basically it used up one hand just to carry arround when detecting.
Also need to keep resetting the sensitivity dial as it is always bumped and sets it off.
$40 is not a deal. Free as a give away then ok but recommend finding the garrett Pro pointer,
works great, solid build, easy to carry with its belt holder, and no tuning to mess with, may cost a bit more but more than worth it

Garrett ProPointer is definitely the way to go....but if the money just isn't there right now...get the Harbor Freight pinpointer for $17.

I have one that I've been using for 2 years and it's still going strong. It's weak point is that the switch gets dirt in it. I sprayed in a shot of contact cleaner and put it back to work.

There is a YouTube video of a trick to increase detection depth of it (Centech is HF's 'brand' name). Just slide some sort of metal ring down the shaft to the bottom (I use a scrap of copper plumbing pipe, but anything metal that is a slip fit will work). With the pinpointer turned on, slide the ring toward the tip till it beeps, then move the ring back away toward the bottom till it just stops beeping. Now the detection depth is at max. With mine, that means a depth of about 2 inches. With the ring at the base (stock configuration)- more like 1 " on a coin.

If you are getting this deal from a company you are buying a detector from, ask them to give you the pin pointer free. They have done that in the past. They might do it if they think they will lose a detector sale because of it.

If money is tight Andrew , buy yourself the centech. I was thinking about a centech for a quick fix, but Glad I got the Propointer, I have abused the Propointer , dropped it a few times(thanks to my avatar) sat on it, rubbed its nose in the dirt hard, washed it under water (with speaker hole covered) I think I could could throw the Propointer across my street , then go pick it up and still work for me.

Buy a Pro-Pointer. Read UW's and John's reviews. I find it almost impossible to detect without one. (Not really, but I STRONGLY prefer using mine.)

Do NOT but a V-4,,,they are junk!!! A friend of mine recieved 2 of them ,free,,with the purchase of 2 different detectors. List price was in the 1$ something range for the V-4.
He gave me one,, and I gave it back to him! Both are useless!!! Useless!!

I have to agree... the V-4 is HUGE. Way too cumbersome to be of any use, and beyond that, it doesn't work that well. If I were on a $40 budget for a pinpointer, I'd either get the centech unit from harbor freight, or buy one of the bounty hunter/ teknetics pinpointers. I have one of each, along with the propointer. I like the bounty hunter/teknetics over the centech only because it is a little more streamlined. The centech works every bit as good though, for less than half the price. I can honestly say that the only thing good about the V-4 was that the battery that came with it fit my other pinpointers!

This is why I love this hobby !!! So many great people to help you out.
I like the harbor freight idea.....I also like the idea of saving for a garrett pinpointer...I also like the idea of calling kellyco tomorrow and asking for it since I just bought and ace 350 from them.
Thanks again !!

I just read a lot of reviews on the Harbor Freight pinpointer for 15 bucks...read some great things about it for the price. It may be a good start for me.
Thanks again.

I got this pointer with my MXT purchase and used it about 10 times then it broke, Not a good pointer. Save your money and buy quality. You may have to eat out less or maybe make a few extra bucks on the side, but get the garrett pro pointer. The best there is. I beat it up bad and it still works perfectly. You will get your money back in the first year of md'ing because of the the saving of recovery time. More time hunting and less time searching. Buy it once and have it for life. HH EZ

Ditto! Well stated. I own one and it is very tiring to have to continually readjust the sensitivity because I constantly bump the knob. Also, the thing is so long I feel like I am wielding a sword. It is kind of embarrassing to carry. The depth is MAX 1". I desperately want a better pinpointer. I would recommend spending a little extra $ for a better one.

I'm guessing the way the Automax pinpointer works is that it's so massive that it has its very own gravity field. If it was any bigger you could use it for jousting.

Yes it has enough gravitational pull to support a moon or two in outer space. It actually LOOKS like a satellite, no?

yes, got one for my birthday, my son got the garretts pin pointer, The Automax does work; however, it only picks up when it is about 1/2 inch from target, where the garretts zeros in on the target above ground, much easier to locate the target with the garretts.
My advice, if you are going to get one, get the garretts, it is receiving great reviews from all the users. I have borrowed my sons and plan to purchase the garretts. Good luck with your decision
