Anyone modded detector rods for better balance?

I have an XT-70 that I'm waiting on a shorter lower rod, so I can hopefully get a better balance, but I'm also thinking of getting a spare mid and work on shortening it as well. Their rods are clearly overkill. Can anyone tell me how to remove a locking collar and replace it?

I'm pretty sure the collar has to be separated at the glue joint, but i imagine you would ruin it and have to buy new collar, somewhere on one of the forums i saw a XTerra that had been modded with different rods, can't remember where, HH:minelab:

Does anyone know what kind of glue is used to attach the locking collar? I got a replacement and am getting set to shorten the extra mid I bought and then attach a new locking collar.

I would imagine that some bits of ABS plastic melted with MEK would work well.

Where did you get the collar? I've been looking for a source of those for a while.
