If it's round I'd say it is a plumb bob.

If it's flat it's a rusty piece of metal with a hook.:poke:

That's my guess.

I've seen clock weights that looked like pine cones...

Is the very end of the hook broken off? I'm inclined to agree with rmptr that it could be a clock weight. Clock weights have been produced in a great many designs.

It was found behind my house in south western. Virginia.
About 4in deep with a pretty strong signal in all metal mode.

It could be a clock weight although it is flat on the arrow head looking
part and not very heavy. No the hook does not appear to be broke.
