Anyone know what "Galena" is? (No fair googling!)

[attachment 52818 calsitepyrite.jpg][attachment 52817 galena.jpg]Hint- The lagest quantitys and the best qualitys of it in the world are found in my area. Here is a pic of a chunk of it.[attachment 52817 galena.jpg]

My grandfather and father-in-law were both retired miners and spent many years working the deep mines thousands of feet underground. My father-in-law collected various specimens of minerals over the years from there. When he died my wife got most of them and uses them for flower beds and other decorations around the yard.I know very little about them but we have been approached by a few collectors over the years begging us to sell them.I have no idea why anyone would want to buy them-but my wife would never sell.

Folowing are more pics including iron pyrite (fools gold) and some others I am not familar with.We probably have a good truck load of different ones. Some are beautiful. If you didn't already know Galena is lead ore in the raw form.To get bullets and sinkers from it it must be smelted. It has been mined in this area for nearly 300 years.

high temps, yeah,i think most rock and stuff is many years ago or in volcanic situations but it looks like leaves or some other plant was kind of fused into it.

a cat whisker and a coil of wire and a good antenna, you can pick up radio without batteries!
