Anyone know what depth the VDI becomes inaccurate

I was thinking it may be around 6-8", does anyone know?

Thanks HH

The VDI can become inaccurate at any depth for many reasons.

The main thing I was looking at was depth

That all depends on settings, ground make up and targets hunted. Yazoo

Although it can depend on a lot of factors, my personal experience has been around 5-7 inches. I've had some barber dimes with questionable readings at 5 inches. (My rule of thumb therefore is jumpy VDI's, but good pinpoint dig it. However I've had some funky pinpoints come up with a coin or two also that were on edge. I like digging iffies, just because I've been rewarded often enough to make it all worth it.

It depends on the size of the target. My silver dollar in my test garden rings from 85-92 and it is buried at 13". I found a mercury dime at 8" and it gave me a vdi in the high 70's. I think the vdi is true to the item until the detector can no longer see the target.

But...... If you have a trashy area or high mineralization the vdi can be drawn out and cause it to be erratic.

I anyone can answer the question the way you wanted it answered they they really know detectors. The V is a deep detector in an experienced hand. In some ground it will be deeper than in other types of ground. Rob

Myself, I don't rely on the depth readings. At times I might use it for a general idea on some targets, but I find digging the target is most reliable. If I do for instance use it and read a quarter at lets say 7 inches, factors may skew the readings, so I become cautious to try and prevent stabbing a misread target with the deadly Lesche. I just don't rely highly on displays - but will at times use them as a secondary but generalized tool - though they can be fun. Will say I think the V3i color & features does have a cool factor to me.

Thanks for everyone's answers.

HH Rick
