discriminating detector that will dicscriminate
out copper penneys & still get dimes?
Thanks, good forum HH...jim

Hi Steven,
Maby you can tell me how.
I've been using the Explorer for a year & a
half & havent been able to accomplish that.
Notice I said coppers not zink's
Thank's for the reply, HH...jim

I feel that you can do this by way of the learn/reject option.

I'm also an XS'er...
I'm sure you can set-up the Explorer to filter out the copper vs. dime in an air test - but in the field I've found corrosion causes the coins to react in funny ways.
That being said, if you filter is set too tight - you'll quite likely either filter out what you're looking for or more typically...the stuff you're trying to avoid slips in.
I can safely say that w/ the Explorer, I typically know it's a dime when I dig...sometimes a penny will suprise me. However, I almost always know when it's a quarter - unless the penny has been morphed in some really wierd way.

I almost always know a dime from a small cent, and quarters are feinately distinct.. but you must be using the smart screen and not the digital mode.. then other things come into play, I find the newer the copper penny the closer to dime it will read also, so since I dont hunt many areas that have new copper pennies its easier.. iron or nearby trash will mess up the reading, but generally the audio remains the same.. another thing that can mess up the reading is multiple coin holes.. indian mixed with silver, or nickels mixed in.. the Barber quarter I got the other day had an indian head in the same hole and it was an odd jumping around curser even though the ground was clear of trash.. so I am glad I dug it <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> So unless I was looking for clad dimes or in a very clean area I wouldnt use too tight a pattern to try and knock out pennies

Thanks for the replys.
This is painful to write this reply seeing I
have to start all over. I wrote a long report on
the Exp. only to have accdently hit the wrong
button on this web keyboard,damn.
To make a long story short. I have been detecting for 12 years & have owned 17 different
detectors, 5 of which have been Minelabs.
I Have found hundreds of wheats & a few indians,
none worth much.
Due to my worsening authritus I have to be more
selective in my targets.
My good finds have improved much with Minelabs.
Once in a while hype will get the better of me &
I'll a new non Minelab only to have to take a big
hit to get rid of it.
On the Exp. I have a couple ways to go to being
more selective.
One of course is to hunt in iron mask & only
go after coin tones more than 4 or 5 inches.
Another way I'm doing well is to set up the
disc. so that clad dimes are iffy in air test,
& using ferous sounds, silver dimes come through
very well, course thoes close to trash are lost.
I wish I could dig every positive signal like Jim
& the rest of you young whippersnappers.
HH & keep up the good posts...jim
