Anyone know about "ornamental" coins??

Found this today at the local soccer park. Rather unusual for this area! Can anyone identify it? It looks pretty new, but, I sure can't read the date!!

Thanks, taz! Yeah, I found out about the reeded edges on another forum and website. A gentleman that goes by jrc79inNC told me the following in another post:

"On the 10 Yen Japanese coin the date on the front side on the third of 4 characters is the number 9. In Japanese and Chinese coinage, they go by the year of the current ruler's tenure. In this case this year 9 is the 9th year of Akihito (Heisei) being in rule and in our dating system is 1997. You have one out of roughly 490.9 million that were minted that year. "

He, obviously, has knowledge of Japanese coinage. I do appreciate your input and taking the time to check out my post!
