Anyone in Western WA with a DFX???

Ah good deal. Time for you and I to do some researching on some spots and go detecting. I hit some early 1900 schools down here today for about 3 hours and found absolutely nothing except a 1940's military issued button. My only guess is that they have already been pounded by other people. Any good spots up north?

Today was my first day out. This is a new hobby for me. I found some 1970's and 80's pennies and a 1920's dime. I am sure with all the old parks around. The only thing is that as I was out and about today, I was trying to figure out what parts of the park were original. There were lots of old growth trees, but wasn't sure.........

Concentrate on where you found the 1920's dime and look around at the surroundings. Then look for those surroundings in other areas as well.

Thanks for the pointer....I would like to figure out how to eliminate pull tabs. I found a lot near BBQ pits and under trees where people crack there beers in the summer....but then pull tabs and gold rings (testing my own ring) were about the same signal. I may be wrong on that, correct me.......please

Dave

It is just something you will have to get use to, digging pull tabs to find the rings. I am new to the DFX as well, but have been metal detecting for a few years, so I cant say there is a way to tell a ring from a pull tab. I am sure once you learn the DFX and what it is telling you, and train your ears, you will be able to tell a ring from a pull tab better. But for now hang in there because pull tabs will be where ever you go.

Is Tacoma too far for you to travel? That is like half way between Everett and Olympia. I have never hunted anywhere in Tacoma, but maybe you and I could research some areas and meet up to hunt them.

Hi Dave:
First and foremost..I do not use, or own a DFX..............I use a XLT.................I think, and know Larry(IL) can confirm, or state if it just isn't the same on DFX like the Xlt has 190 pickup points factored in -95 to +95. This is really notch discrimination..Though Whites does not call it notch. You can never take out all pull tabs, and if you desire ring finds, you would not want to. Rings and pull tabs are very close on the scale. You can however remove the most common, and pesky ones from your immediate field of hunting. Say you dig 10 signals and it's a certain type..go to your learn-reject program and notch that tab out. You will still pick up other types, and maybe even some of the ones notched out..(Deep) whatever reason..But mostly that type will be gone where you are.It will help a little
and remember you will also mask targets near where you take out the tabs..So you can, and in fact, will loose some good targets in the process. The plus side is you can hunt, get most rings if they are there and cut down on the pull tab digs..It works most of the time well, and lets you hunt a really littered site. It's not the perfect solution, but at least you can hunt the area fairly well, and still get most of the keepers. I will restate...If you want rings..you must dig pull tab signals.
I have been informed for every 1,000 pull tabs you may find one or two rings..you have to decide is it worth the digging..For me it;s not.....for many it is.

The above is only my opinion and may not even be close to correct..so anyone with more knowledge please correct me..I welcome it.

My sister has a 100 year old farm in Conway WA. I spent a couple hours out there on Sunday, and my DFX was a screaming disaster with findind every nail and old copper wire. I know that I have to crawl before I can walk. I am really wanting to get out with some of you pros.....Most parks in the area have been revamped. I plan on attending the local MD club to learn and meet some buddies....

I didn't see mention anything about an accessory coil, but if you don't have one I'd suggest latching onto a 5.3 Eclipse. Mount that 6
